The expression that caught some of my close friends upon learning the details of the Levin reform reminds me of a story about one of the most startling openings to a performance I've ever experienced:
About 20 years ago I went with my band to a small club in the north.
We assembled and adjusted the instruments, and Muti the drummer, who was not satisfied with the sound of the bass drum (the big bass drum that stands in front of the audience), pushed a small pillow into it to muffle the sound a bit.
We did a balance, and retired to the artists' room until we were called to go up.
When we got on stage I surveyed the audience with satisfaction.

We are going to spend here tonight.
But then - in Muti's first bass drum hit, a real anarchy took place:
People got up screaming in panic from their desks and ran away.
It took me a minute to realize what had happened: while we were in the artists' room, a stray cat who entered the club saw the bass drum with the pillow as a great bed for his night's sleep.
And when Muti hit the pedal for the first time - the cat realized his mistake, jumped out of the drum in a panic and landed with a broken howl on one of the tables closest to the stage.
When someone wakes up, sometimes you have to look for the "base drum" - that is, understand what is the imaginary cradle that caused him to fall asleep in the first place.
In the case of the dreaded reform of the legal system, this cradle is the very phrase "the State of Israel".
The great majority of us were born after the establishment of the state.
For us, the existential wars of the State of Israel are something that happened in black and white, to our grandfather or father.
We do not imagine a situation in which the State of Israel will cease to exist.
But the truth is, even though today it is difficult to imagine Syrian and Egyptian armored columns crossing our borders in a joint effort to eliminate the Zionist enterprise - the attempts to eliminate it are not over:
Our most stubborn enemy has steadfastly refused to end the conflict with us, even in the face of the most generous offers made to him.
And as we saw just this week in the celebrations of the return of the murderer Karim Younes - quite a few of the Arab citizens who live among us identify with this enemy and his ambitions in Rish Gali and in the heart of the country.
The struggle for the Land of Israel is not over, but the arena and the tools have changed, and within them - the legal arena has enormous weight.
Here is an example: Israel is having difficulty strengthening its grip on the Galilee and the Negev through the simplest means available to Zionism from its inception - settlement - because of the Kadan High Court of March 2000, in which then Supreme Court President Aharon Barak prohibited the allocation of land to new settlements that are defined as Jewish settlements.
There was also a minority opinion among the judges: Judge Yaakov Kadami argued in a single opinion that since Israel is a Jewish state, it is possible to balance this principle with the value of equality.
The last elections were held on this, among other things, and the majority decided that they wanted to see in the Supreme Court more judges like Kami, who are sensitive to the struggle that Israel is in.
I too would love for the details of the Levin reform to be included in the talks with the opposition, but for that we need to agree on the basic premise, which is - that the State of Israel is still fighting for its existence as a Jewish state, and that this battle is also taking place at the High Court.
If we agree on this, we will work out the rest of the details...
