Hardly anyone wants to go without a holiday - even with the expensive prices announced for summer 2023.

But there are still savings.

According to experts, summer vacations this year will be significantly more expensive than in previous years.

The HolidayCheck

portal recently reported price increases in most holiday countries – and the online travel portal

is also assuming higher costs.

Not only the high inflation and the lack of staff in the hotel industry are to blame, but also the lower capacities that have prevailed since the corona pandemic.

Nevertheless, many Germans do not want to do without travelling.

So if you want to get away comparatively cheaply despite the current price development, you should heed a few tips.

Those who are flexible in terms of time can also book at the last minute

In general, many tour operators are advising booking early this year instead of planning at short notice.

"Today, in my opinion, it's cheaper to take early bird discounts instead of relying on last-minute deals," said Ingo Burmester, head of Central Europe at DER Touristik, recently according to a report by the dpa news agency.

According to Carlo Speth, Co-Head of Market DACH at Holiday Pirates, anyone who wants to travel during popular periods such as the summer holidays or public holidays should book early.

"If you are not quite sure months in advance, it is best to book an offer with a free cancellation option and thus secure the price, but with the necessary flexibility," says the travel expert.

With last-minute deals, on the other hand, those could be lucky

Change your departure airport and save when you fly

When looking for suitable flights, travelers often restrict themselves to the next largest airport.

However, it is worth switching to smaller airports or airports in neighboring countries.

"We are currently seeing extreme price increases, especially on the German flight market, while some cheap offers are still possible abroad," reports Speth.

In some cases, vacationers could save half of the airfare.

Flights from Luxembourg, the Netherlands, France, Poland and Switzerland are therefore worthwhile.

According to the expert, it is also advisable to take a look at neighboring federal states: “Even within Germany, flight prices vary enormously from airport to airport.

Especially when there are holidays in your own federal state, but not in the neighboring state, you can save here.” Since a “train to flight ticket” is already included in the price of many tour operators, holidaymakers would not incur any additional costs for the journey.

The cheapest travel destinations for summer 2023

In order to find a cheap price for the 2023 summer vacation, it is also worth looking at less known or unfamiliar destinations.

Instead of going to the German coast, according to Speth, travelers could also vacation on the Polish Baltic Sea.

According to the expert, those who prefer to go into the sun are well advised to travel to destinations such as Italy or Greece.

"Bella Italia has relatively constant prices," says Speth.

Increased prices would be less noticeable here than in France or Spain, for example.

Costs have also risen in Greece, but the price-performance ratio is still very good.

The HolidayCheck

booking portal, on the

other hand, lists Mallorca as a cheap travel destination for 2023.

Although this is a popular destination, the high demand would ensure a wider range of flight connections and hotels.

Thus, despite price increases, vacationers on the Balearic Islands would get away cheaper than anywhere else.

Fuerteventura would be at the same price level as in 2019.

Speth has another money-saving tip: Vacationers should look for holiday homes rather than hotels.

The latter are often expensive for short-term bookings or are already occupied.

However, there are often cheaper offers for holiday homes – this is a good alternative, especially for families or groups.
