The projectile could have exploded at any time: a Ukrainian serviceman had a grenade in his chest. Despite special circumstances, a military surgeon and his team managed to operate on her.

Amid Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, military doctors may have saved the life of a Ukrainian soldier with a delicate operation.

The man had apparently been shot at, a grenade stuck in his chest.

"Military doctors performed an operation to remove an unexploded VOG shell from the soldier's body," Ukraine's Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maljar wrote on Facebook.

One of the most experienced surgeons in the Ukrainian armed forces led the operation, it is said.

Two members of the military would have monitored the safety of the patient and the medics - because the grenade could have exploded at any time, according to the information.

Therefore, the surgeon had to operate without electrocoagulation.

This is a common method that uses alternating current to cut or remove tissue.

"I think this case will go down in medical textbooks"

The intervention was successful, Maljar wrote in her report.

A photo she published showed the lead surgeon holding the grenade.

Where the soldier was deployed and how exactly the injury occurred remains unclear.

But this Thursday Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to Ukraine's Interior Ministry, reported on the patient's current condition, citing Yevgenia Slivko, a spokeswoman for the commander of the medical forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

"He is now being sent to rehabilitation, his condition is stable," Sliwko said.

According to Sliwko, the man was born in 1994, so he was probably 28 years old.

She further wrote that it was the first time that the military doctors had performed such an operation.

"I think this case will go down in medical textbooks."
