Everyone is talking about the energy turnaround, the Rot-Weiss Überacker sports club is already doing it - and has been since 2009. A floodlight system that can be controlled via smartphone also helps to save energy.

Überacker – The Rot-Weiss Überacker association is almost a role model on the way to the energy transition.

With the generation of clean electricity for self-consumption through the photovoltaic system on the roof of the sports home, the club heralded the energy transition in 2009.

BLSV campaign

Without even suspecting how the electricity prices would develop, "no one could have foreseen that", according to the long-standing RW President Josef Müller, the club decided in 2021 to convert the two training grounds on the club premises.

The trigger was also that the Bavarian State Sports Association (BLSV) had launched the LED floodlight campaign.

The BSLV and the Federal Society for the Future and the Environment (ZUG) promised substantial grants for the conversion.

Work began in March 2021, and the LED floodlight system was installed in July.

The cost of the conversion was 52,000 euros.

In addition to the grants (20 percent from the BLSV, 30 percent from the ZUG), there were also grants from the municipality and private donations.

But that wasn't enough.

The club had to take out a loan.

Big savings

"Now that the old 2000-watt heaters are gone, we now have energy savings of 71 percent," says Müller.

The president is not only enthusiastic about the savings, but also about the new technology of the floodlight system.

"It's a super thing.

The floodlight is controlled via smartphone,” he explains.

"Every trainer has the app and is authorized by the board to switch the floodlights on or off." He monitors this because he can see the light from home.

"If the floodlights aren't switched off by 9 p.m., I control them from home."

Heater comes out

But that's not all on the way to the energy transition, which the red-whites are contesting, reports Müller about the next project.

“In 2023 the entire heating system will be torn out.

It uses 12,000 liters of oil a year.

That's too much for me.” With a groundwater heat pump, you can save around 6,000 euros a year.

In addition, the measure to optimize heating is subsidized by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection with 45 percent.

"After all, you should leave something sustainable for the young people for the future," says President Josef Müller.

And in this regard, RW Überacker is on the right track.
