At the beginning of April, Werner Gschwendtner's kiosk was replaced by an ice cream parlor that also offered tobacco and souvenirs.

The operator will be Giovanni Carlino.

Starnberg

– Werner Gschwendtner's kiosk on the lake promenade has been irrevocably history for a few days.

After 33 years he retired with his wife Anna, much to the chagrin of many regular customers.

"We are completely overwhelmed by the sympathy," says the Peißenberger (69).

"We got flowers without end." The rush of the Starnberger, who wanted to say goodbye to him personally, was huge.

But now the Gschwendtner era is finally over.

The people of Starnberg are all the more wondering what should now take the place of the kiosk.

As our newspaper has learned, Giovanni Carlino (47) takes over the shop.

He already runs eleven ice cream parlors, three in Munich, the others in Starnberg and around the lake, for example in Tutzing, Pöcking and Münsing.

They are called either "Gelatino" or "GelatOK" - the latter is the organic line.

In 2009, the native Sicilian opened the ice cream parlor in the Seearkaden, and now there is another branch in his hometown.

"If all goes well, we'll open on April 1," he says.

That would be in time for the start of the excursion season.

Due to the proximity to the railway, the kiosk - working title "Gelatino Lago" - will be more than a normal ice cream parlor.

The railway as the owner has insisted in the contract that the range includes more than ice cream, coffee and croissants.

"There's also tobacco and souvenirs," says Carlino.

What will no longer be available from spring are high-proof spirits such as Jägermeister.

"That doesn't fit into our concept," says the new tenant.

He makes an exception with the beer, which you can take away.

"That's just part of it in Bavaria."

In some respects he will build on what has proven itself at the Gschwendtners, such as the soft drinks.

However, tickets are not available at “Gelatino Lago”.

"We need our own checkout for that."

For the summer, the ice cream confectioner is planning to open a terrace with a view of Lake Starnberg.

"We want to do it in such a way that everyone is satisfied, the railway, the city and our customers."

The kiosk is also a factor that should not be underestimated for tourism.

Christoph Winkelkötter from the Society for Economic and Tourism Development (gwt) wishes the tenant good luck.

"I hope that he can compensate for the loss." Because: "A kiosk is always a contact point, a source of information, a place for exchange for the locals, but also for our guests."
