Washington-SANA

Six people were killed, as a result of thunderstorms and a tornado that swept through central Alabama yesterday.

Reuters quoted a spokeswoman for the mayor of Otoga County in the state as saying: Six people were killed in the storms, without providing further details.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey declared a state of emergency in six Alabama counties severely affected by the storms: Otoga, Chambers, Kosa, Dallas, Elmore and Tallapoosa.

Strong winds and torrential rains destroyed homes and left tens of thousands without power in parts of Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama, and authorities canceled and delayed more than 250 flights at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.
