The Biathlon World Cup in Ruhpolding is in full swing.
The athletes will compete in relay and mass start competitions until Sunday.
Some paramedics from the district association of the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK) are very close this year.
District – You ensure safety on the sidelines of the sporting event.
BRK Managing Director Rainer Bertram and Matthias Becker, on-call manager at the BRK in Olching, explain how the preparation for the operation went and why enough paramedics were found immediately.
How did it happen, Mr. Bertram and Mr. Becker, that paramedics from the district are present at the event in Ruhpolding?
Becker: The colleagues from the Traunstein district association are tasked with securing the Biathlon World Cup.
That's why a Bavaria-wide request was made within the BRK in advance who would like to support the people of Traunstein.
We have been providing support in Ruhpolding for over ten years thanks to long-standing contacts between the district on-call leaders.
And people from the local associations found each other immediately?
Becker: Yes, it's an event that you're happy to be part of.
It's something different compared to an assignment at a folk festival.
You can find good contacts with BRK colleagues from all over Upper Bavaria.
Even helpers had to stay at home because too many volunteered on some days.
But that happens every year.
Bertram: Many do not do this for the first time.
For at least ten years we have been with our people in Ruhpolding at the World Cup when the BRK is commissioned to provide safety.
It is a welcome highlight among the volunteers.
How many paramedics are there? And how many emergency vehicles?
Becker: There are a total of 20 members from the district.
Six helpers from the Olching local association are going along.
This year we only asked for staff.
In the past, however, we have already provided support with an ambulance staffed by volunteers when crossing the finish line in the Chiemgau Arena.
Are you permanently stationed in Ruhpolding during the deployment?
Becker: No.
We leave every morning around 6 a.m.
Deployment begins at 9:30 a.m.
In the evening it goes back to Fürstenfeldbruck and the next day a new team sets off.
On the site itself, the squads are regularly changed at their posts.
So we are always deployed at a different location in the Chiemgau Arena.

Did you prepare specifically for the World Cup?
Becker: Since we have to wrap up warm, we have prepared the appropriate clothing.
We received material from the colleagues from Traunstein, such as a map with directions, a schedule and who the local contacts are.
We receive the rest of the material on site.
