Death of Waly, 14, in Paris: the teenager who stabbed him sentenced to seven years in prison

The victim had been killed during a brawl between gangs from rival neighborhoods a little less than three years ago in Paris (Xe). A total of six teenagers

It took nearly seven hours of reflection for the jurors of the Assize Court of Paris miners to deliver their verdict this Friday at the end of the afternoon.

The only teenager, nicknamed "H2", prosecuted for willful violence resulting in death without intention to give it, was sentenced to seven years in prison.

On January 29, 2020, Waly, 14, from the Belleville district (20th century), found himself isolated in front of other teenagers from the 18th and 10th centuries, including "H2", between Place du Colonel-Fabien and rue of the Grange-aux-Belles (Xe).

He had first taken a fatal blow from Opinel 13 in the thigh before another teenager struck him with a gun butt on the head.

He died the next day in hospital.

The author of the fatal stab wound has four years left in prison

There are therefore four years in prison to serve for the author of the stabbing who has been in pre-trial detention for just under three years.

For his lawyer, Me Julien Fresnault, “it is a balanced decision, which takes into account the minority and the particular circumstances of this case in which the defendants were not at the origin of the brawl”.

For some time the tension had been rising between the young people of Belleville and their rivals from Barbès, allied to those of Grange-aux-Belles.

Each side armed itself in anticipation of a possible brawl.

During the trial, which obviously took place behind closed doors, the context of this rivalry was "well traced", noted an observer.

The trigger mentioned during the instruction, a story of AirPods, turned out to be smoky.

Still, the two camps had indeed found themselves settling their scores.

Two teenagers under the age of 16, in the camp of Waly's opponents, had already appeared before a juvenile court ruling in criminal matters.

Among them, the author of the shots.

He had been sentenced to five years in prison – including two years suspended – with continued detention.

“Perpetual punishment for the family”

This week, three other teenagers, still from the same camp, also appeared at the assizes, but only for armed mob.

Two of them were acquitted, the court considering, after a long legal debate, that the presence of at least one armed individual in the gang was not enough to characterize this offense for those whose proof had not been established. that they were.

Clearly, only the teenager of whom we were sure

(three witnesses had attested to it)

that he was armed was condemned.

For the civil parties, that is to say the relatives of the victim, “justice was rendered in a firm, dignified and serene manner”, estimates their lawyer Sabrina Goldman.

“No amount of punishment can in any way repair the pain and suffering of Waly's family, which is completely destroyed.

For her, the sentence will remain perpetual”.
