After fleeing and being expelled in their youth: 60 years ago, Irmgard and Matthias Bach built a life together in Dorfen.

Now they celebrated Diamond Wedding.

Dorfen

– “We are happy together, we have 60 good years behind us,” say Matthias and Irmgard Bach from Dorfen.

The two celebrated their diamond wedding with their family.

The extended family is sitting at the table, granddaughter Andrea is holding little Elias in her arms, grandson-in-law Florian is holding little Elena: a large, happy group has come together in the Indian restaurant Taj in Dorfen to celebrate the 60th wedding anniversary together.

Not everyone has gathered yet, some guests still have to work like grandson Michael.

District Administrator Martin Bayerstorfer and Dorfen's second mayor Ludwig Rudolf also come to congratulate.

Matthias Bach is Danube Swabian, he was born in 1942 in Stanischitz, formerly Hungary, later Yugoslavia and today Serbia.

When he was nine months old, his father died at the front in Russia.

He can still vaguely remember the time after the end of the war in the camp and the expulsion, when he was five years old.

The roots of Irmgard Bach (78) lie in the Sudetenland in what was then the district of Mies.

A difficult time, full of privation, lay ahead for both of the expellees: They had to fight against many prejudices, they were destitute.

They were often laughed at at school because of their bad clothes.

In Munich, however, the families quickly gained a foothold.

Groom Bach was 21 on his wedding day and his bride 18 years old.

The two got to know each other as children, because they lived in the so-called "moonlight settlement" in Munich-Moosach.

But it didn't spark until they were teenagers.

After the first tour together on Matthias' moped, young Irmgard was gone.

The retail salesman worked his way up, Irmgard Bach was also hardworking and worked all her life.

The two built their house in Dorfen, moved out of Munich in 1969, but commuted by train every day.

The children Irmgard and Stefan grew up in Dorfen.

The couple has become happy in Dorfen, they like living here.

Matthias Bach is with the homeowners and was active on the board for a long time.

He still delivers the club newspapers.

When the weather is nice, the sporty senior bikes his tour.

The Bachs have traveled to their old homeland in Serbia several times.

They were also in England, with the Queen in Buckingham Palace, as well as in Hungary and Corfu.

The family is still the most important thing to them, say the jubilarians: "We really wish that we can still experience how the great-grandchildren grow up."
