Erding

– There is often talk of a throwaway society in which we live.

A balance sheet from the district’s waste management system, which was presented for the first eleven months of 2021, shows what the figures in Erdinger Land look like.

The figures for 2022 should be comparable.

From January to November, a mountain of rubbish of over 76,000 tons was piled up.

On average, each inhabitant produced 540 kilograms of waste.

However, most of them are recyclable materials - 51,000 tons in total, 370 kilograms per capita.

In the case of residual waste, it was almost 24,000 tons, 170 kilos per inhabitant.

These quantities ended up in almost 40,000 residual waste, 36,000 organic waste and 27,000 paper bins - or on the 120 container sites or one of the 30 recycling depots, which were open 270 hours a week in summer.

The 31st recycling center will open in 2023 – in Langenpreising.

At the annual press conference, district administrator Martin Bayerstorfer gave his citizens a good report: “In the district of Erding, the proportion of recyclables in residual waste is rather low.

The introduction of the organic waste bin around 30 years ago and the well-received recycling center system with many free fractions skims off most of the recyclable materials and feeds them back into the resource cycle.”

Nevertheless, the garbage fees had to be increased at the beginning of 2022, for the first time since 2011 and after two reductions.

According to Bayerstorfer, this was due to increased costs for logistics, personnel and recycling on the one hand, and lower revenues from the recycling of valuable materials on the other.

"There will be no increase in 2023," promised the district administrator.

For consumers this has meant for a year now: The 60 liter bin for one to three people costs 144 euros per year, the 80 liter bin (4 people) costs 165.60 euros, the 120 liter bin (5 6 people) 208.80 euros, the 240 and 1100 liter bins for apartment buildings 381.60 and 1766.40 euros respectively.

Bayerstorfer emphasized in this context: "Compared to the surrounding districts, the Erding district still has the lowest fees - with a full range of services." On average, these are around 15 percent lower than those in the surrounding area.

Waste management also includes mobile problem waste collection, bulky waste delivery (partly free of charge), the shredder for garden waste, advice and the waste app.

According to the district administrator, it is currently installed on 44,500 mobile phones and is called up around 110,000 times a month to find out when which bin is emptied.

The gift market, which can be reached on the homepage www.landkreis-erding.de, and which has sold around 2,500 items since 2020, makes a contribution to avoiding waste.

Waste management is feeling the downside of growing electrification.

Bayerstorfer reported that due to the improper disposal of lithium batteries, there are more and more fires in disposal facilities, including a year ago at the waste transfer station in Isen, which then had to be shut down for several days.

Damaged batteries in particular pose a risk.

He appealed to citizens not to throw them in the yellow bag or in the residual waste bin, but to return them to the trade or take them to the recycling depots.

Lithium batteries with more than 500 grams are only accepted at the recycling centers in Dorfen (Gewerbering), Erding (Rennweg), Hörlkofen, Taufkirchen and Wartenberg as well as at the Isen landfill.

The poles should be taped for safety reasons.

E-bike batteries and other large lithium batteries weighing up to 30 kilograms can only be disposed of in Isen - for a fee.

Small batteries and accumulators also do not belong in household waste, they can be disposed of at recycling centers or returned to retailers.

The fire brigades have also reacted to the electrical fires: A battery fire extinguishing system was procured for this purpose in mid-2022, which is stationed at the Oberding fire brigade.

It is intended to be used primarily in the event of fires involving electric cars, such as the one recently seen on the A 94 near Lengdorf.

The challenge here: The fires flare up again and again.
