Catherine realized that she was married to her husband... but also to the mayor of her birthplace. An error by the town hall which brings its share of complications.

An administrative error that could cause a lot of trouble.

Catherine, a 51-year-old woman from Hérault, discovered in June 2022 that she was married to her husband … but also to the mayor of her town of birth, as told by

La Dépêche

.

While her 29-year-old son has just died, the 50-year-old is embarking on administrative procedures.

It is through this that she finally discovers the error, upon receipt of two documents.

If her marriage certificate indicates that she is married to her husband, her birth certificate gives a completely different version.

"

It is well registered that I got married in 2006, the problem is that it is absolutely not the name of my husband which is written here but that of the mayor who united us

", explains Catherine daily.

“Forbidden to be a bigamist”

An error that provokes the irony of an employee of the town hall of Gonesse in Val-d'Oise, where she was born, while Catherine seeks to rectify the situation: "

Madam, you know that in our country it is forbidden to be bigamous

”.

This blunder could have significant consequences for Catherine's future situation.

In the eyes of the law, the Héraultaise is indeed the wife of the mayor of her commune: the birth certificate takes precedence over the marriage certificate.

If her husband were to die, she could therefore not touch anything, “

since I am not really married to him

”.

The retiree has hired a lawyer to take charge of the case, who underlines the inheritance problems that such an error could cause, in particular for the payment of the survivor's pension.

Immersed in an administrative imbroglio, Catherine struggles to have her situation recognized by the municipal administrations, who pass the buck and do not seem in a hurry to deal with the problem.

For the lawyer, however, the concern comes from the town hall of birth, which made a mistake when transcribing the marriage certificate.

Catherine must now apply for the rectification of an error in a civil act.

This document must be sent to him by his town hall of birth: the situation would then be regularized after one to two months.

In the meantime, the Héraultaise prefers to laugh: “

Grandma is a bigamist, it was the subject of discussion at Christmas this year!
