How to watch football on TV today: new platforms, subscriptions and more and more exclusive events via streaming

2023-01-13T20:20:56.676Z

New technologies, which were boosted during the pandemic, caused the explosion of online broadcasts of sporting events. There, in Argentina, ESPN took center stage through the Star+ platform.

The world changes, customs change, culture changes and the way of watching football on television was not going to be left out.

Advances in technology allow a new way of consuming sports.

With the confinement caused by the quarantine due to the Covid-19 pandemic,

streaming platforms grew exponentially

and since the thaw and the return to normality

there are uses and customs that seem to have been installed.

Entertainment companies took note and with a trained audience they launched to promote streaming platforms to broadcast sports.

Boxing, for example, is a pioneer in this type of modalities.

The old

pay per view

(pay to see) mutated into a Netflix-style application to contract the service and subscribe to sports content.

In this area, the one from

DAZN

-for example- is the most popular (although not for that reason cheaper), however it is not available in Argentina.

The one who burst into the world of online broadcasts was ESPN

, the American giant that has belonged to the ranks of Disney for a few years, through its

Star+

platform .

It no longer only provides series and movies, but more and more exclusive sports content is offered:

Formula 1

-at least three races a year are closed to subscribers-, the

English Premier League

and France's

Ligue 1

, are some examples.

Also the option to watch all the

Grand Slam matches on demand,

 extra

NBA

matches and evenings of the growing UFC of mixed martial arts.

Flea matches are usually exclusive to Star+.

And now it also has

summer soccer matches

: the international triangular with Boca, Independiente and Everton from Chile, River's tour of the United States and the Río de la Plata series, with the participation of teams from Argentina and Uruguay with guests from Ecuador and Peru.

They all go for Star+.

The same thing happened with the return of

Lionel Messi

to Paris Saint Germain, this Wednesday, after being crowned world champion with the Argentine National Team, it was broadcast exclusively by the paid streaming platform of the American chain.

And along the same lines -according to data provided by the company- during the weekend of January 21 to 23, half of the ten Premier League matches will be broadcast exclusively on Star+ (among them the matches of Manchester City, Tottenham and Brighton & Hove Albion, of interest in Argentina by Julián Álvarez, Cuti Romero and Alexis Mac Allister).

To take a look at how the market is in Argentina, months ago a report from the Audiovisual Observatory of the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (INCAA) was released, which states that Argentine households spend more than

US$ 300 million a year

on platforms streaming like Netflix, Disney or HBO.

Star+ (which belongs to Disney) has a basic service that costs about 880 pesos.

Is the number of subscribers large?

When consulted by

Clarín

, company sources explained that it does not usually provide figures for the number of subscribers.

It is a completely different system than what is needed to watch the Professional Soccer League.

There, for now, the "new-old" method of cable television will continue to be used.

Although of course, you have to contract the

Soccer Pack

(the price varies depending on the combo that is contracted from the provider company, but it is around 1,300 pesos per month) to have the

ESPN Premium

and

TNT Sports

service .

The River-Boca on May 27, for the local tournament, will be seen through these signals, which can also be accessed through the Flow platform, as long as the same premium content pack is paid for.
