2023-01-13T10:27:58.423Z

A day after the former Iranian official admitted that he gave information to the West: the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council in Iran will be removed from his position • The official: Ali Shamkhani, one of the top figures in Iranian politics - only Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is above him • Local news agency: "False information" • Anti news channel Institutional: "Internal power struggles within the regime"

The secretary of the Supreme National Security Council in Iran will be removed from his position.

The regime's state media as well as Telegram channels associated with the Revolutionary Guards are reporting today (Friday) that General Ali Simkhani will soon be replaced by one of the commanders from the Revolutionary Guards.

This, after the arrest of former Defense Minister Ali-Reza Asgari, who is accused of spying for the West and who is considered to be his associate.

The person who will replace Simkhani soon is one of the generals of the Revolutionary Guards - Major General Jolmali Rashid, or Major General Ahmed Vahidi or Major General Mustafa Mohammad-Najjar.

One of the most important bodies in the Islamic Republic under whose responsibility is safeguarding the interests of the regime and determining the general policy seems to have been shaken in recent hours following the arrest of Asgari.

Asgari also served as a cabinet member in the government of Mohammad Khatami (1997-2005), and he admitted last night that he gave information to the West to his operatives in the British intelligence service (MI6).

Now, it seems that the arrest caused a chain reaction at the top of the regime and even reached Shimhani, the Secretary General of the Supreme Council for National Security since 2013 and one of the most influential figures in Iranian politics, second only to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

"One of the most important agents in the intelligence service"

In the "Noor News" agency, which is close to the Supreme Council, on the other hand, they defined the reports about Simkhani's departure as "false information".

However, the news surrounding the senior official hints at the sensitive situation prevailing in the Iranian leadership.

The anti-establishment news channel "Iran International" broadcasting from London reported that the death sentence imposed on Asgari and now the reports about the possible removal of his ally Simkhani are evidence of internal power struggles within the regime.

Earlier this week, the Iranian authorities revealed Asghari's identity for the first time and defined him as "one of the most important agents of the British intelligence service in the strategic centers of the country."

From details quoted in local media, as well as by the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence, it was detailed that the former official enjoyed "access to several sensitive devices in the country".

Yesterday he "confessed" in front of the camera that he gave sensitive information to the West, including details about the nuclear scientist Mohsen Frizada, the head of Iran's nuclear-military program which was eliminated in November 2020, an action attributed to Israel.
