The person who allegedly shot journalist Ciro Gómez is arrested in Mexico

The man, arrested in Michoacán, was the co-pilot of the motorcycle from which the communicator was attacked in mid-December in Mexico City. In total there are already 16 detainees for his involvement in the events.


The Mexican authorities announced on Thursday the arrest of the alleged person who allegedly shot the well-known journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva in mid-December in Mexico City, in an attack from which he escaped unharmed thanks to the armor of his car.

The head of government of the capital, Claudia Sheinbaum, explained in a message posted on the social network Twitter that the person arrested is the co-driver of the motorcycle who shot at point-blank range against the communicator.

"A few minutes ago the Secretary of Citizen Security, the capital's Prosecutor's Office, the Secretary of Defense and the Michoacán prosecutor's office arrested in Michoacán the person allegedly responsible for shooting against Ciro Gómez Leyva. It is about the person who was co-pilot on the motorcycle the day of the attack. Our commitment is to end impunity," Sheinbaum wrote.

The Michoacán prosecutor, Adrián López Solís, identified the detainee as Héctor Eduardo and confirmed that the arrest took place in the municipality of Tangancícuaro.

This town is located between the towns of Zamora and Quiroga, within the so-called "death row", an area controlled by the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJGN), according to the newspaper El Universal.

The Mexico City Attorney General's Office simultaneously reported the arrest of four other people in the State of Mexico linked to the attack, according to the local press, bringing the number of people arrested for their involvement in the attack to 16.

They accuse a gang dedicated to the assassination of the attack against a Mexican journalist.

The police operation made it possible to seize the keys of two vehicles that participated in the events, seven cell phones, cartridges, a short-arm charger, narcotics and marijuana, and documents.

The Mexican authorities already announced two days ago the arrest of eleven people for their participation in the attack against the journalist, all of them "possible members of a criminal cell" that was dedicated "to the

extortion, drug dealing and hit men".

Gómez Leyva, one of the most popular radio journalists in Mexico, denounced that two people shot him with the “clear intent” to kill him on December 15 when he was on his way home in the Coyoacán mayor's office.

“At 11:10 pm, 200 meters from my house, two people on a motorcycle shot at me, apparently with the clear intent to kill me.

The armor of my truck that I was driving saved me and I have reported the matter to the authorities, ”he recounted on Twitter.

Police found one of the cars allegedly involved in the attack on December 30, according to the newspaper Milenio.

The vehicle did not have a theft report, according to the Public Vehicular Registry, and was made available to the Prosecutor's Office.
