Continuous rain and storms cause flooded streets and basements in parts of Germany.

It's supposed to stay wet for the weekend.

Munich – There is still no trace of winter in large parts of Germany.

Instead, the weather is often wet, cold, windy and gray.

In the west of the Federal Republic, the continuous rain on Friday (January 13) triggered many fire brigade operations.

Streets were flooded, basements filled with water.

The first streams and rivers have already burst their banks.

It should also remain wet in the coming days.

Full basement in North Rhine-Westphalia: continuous rain makes it difficult for emergency services in Sauerland

In the night of Friday, January 13th, the Sauerland in North Rhine-Westphalia was particularly affected by the continuous rain.

In the early hours of the night there were a total of 480 operations in the Märkisch district, said a spokesman for the district control center on Friday.

According to initial reports, there were no injuries.

Due to constant rain, flooding due to overflowing streams and smaller rivers was previously warned.

It was also uncomfortable at night for the remaining climate activists who are fighting against the Lützerath eviction.

According to the information, the focus of the operations in the Märkisch district was the Oberbrügge district of Halver.

The Volme River had meanwhile burst its banks, but the situation eased again during the night.

The fire brigade averted considerable damage with sandbags and pumps, a district fire chief was quoted as saying.

The authorities had previously called on people living on the Volme not to stay in the lower floors or basements of their homes.

The first streams and rivers in Hesse overflow their banks: reporting level 2 in several places

In Hesse, the persistent rain has also caused the first streams and rivers to burst their banks.

According to an overview by the Hessian State Office for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (HLNUG), the flooding was strongest on the Lahn and Eder rivers.

There, on Friday morning, reporting level 2 was exceeded at the measuring stations in Gießen, Leun (Lahn-Dill district) and Schmittlotheim (Waldeck-Frankenberg district).

At 23 stations, the water levels rose above notification level 1. The cause of the flooding is "continuous rain and the extensive saturation of the soil with moisture".

According to HLNUG, reporting level 1 is reached as soon as a body of water is full to the brim and the water is already overflowing the bank in some places.

Reporting level 2 corresponds to a "major flood" that floods properties near the shore and occasionally causes basements to overflow.

From reporting level 3, towns and villages are surrounded by flooding and roads are impassable.

Storm and rain are to be expected in the coming days.

Lower Saxony: Rising river levels expected after heavy rainfall

In Lower Saxony, too, the levels of some rivers may continue to rise in the coming days after the heavy rainfall.

The flood forecasting center informed the German Press Agency that up to 20 liters of precipitation per square meter are forecast for the Osnabrück area in the coming days.

Up to 30 liters per square meter are expected for stagnant layers of resin.

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), further storm lows will move over Lower Saxony and Bremen at the weekend.

In addition to more rain, they should also bring some strong gusts of wind.

Weather in Germany: It stays wet – "in places more than 100 liters per square meter"

The experts of the weather portal

predict something similar.

Most of the rain will therefore hit the western half up to the north in the coming hours.

But even from the Black Forest to the Bavarian Forest, widespread rain totals of 30 to 50 liters per square meter are possible.

"The highest estimates of the weather computer assume more than 100 liters per square meter in places," the experts continue.

This can lead to flooding, especially on small streams and rivers.

The water levels are also likely to rise visibly on large rivers, but according to the meteorologists, a critical situation is not to be feared for the time being.

In Munich and the region, the onset of winter with plenty of snow is imminent.
