After the anger about Friedrich Merz' "Lanz" appearance, the CDU went on the offensive.

There is even talk of a “guided debate”.

But the criticism persists.

Berlin/Frankfurt – A lot of trouble broke out over Friedrich Merz after his “Lanz” appearance.

Nevertheless, the CDU leader has now defended his statements.

It is necessary "that we talk about the question: what is actually going wrong in this country?" said Merz on Friday (January 13) in the ZDF "Morgenmagazin".

In the “ZDF-Talk”, the CDU leader spoke, among other things, to children of people with a migration background as “little pashas” – in the context of problems at schools in Germany.

The reason was the New Year's Eve riots in Berlin and the search for reasons.

A few sentences later, Merz had his eye on “young people from the Arab world”.

Among others, the prominent economist and "Lanz" co-discussionist Marcel Fratzscher

subsequently reprimanded this as "populist" and economically counterproductive at the request of

"Pascha" debate: Merz follows up - and gets CDU protection help

Friedrich Merz now said that teachers in schools often had the problem of being recognized by the students.

Often these are students from immigrant families.

You have to be able to discuss these topics, because "what goes wrong in school can hardly be corrected afterwards in society".

Merz received support from the former CDU Family Minister Kristina Schröder.

“We have problems with masculinity, honor and violence, especially in migrant Muslim families.

That's what Friedrich Merz meant and translated into talk show German when he spoke of the little pashas," she explained in an interview with

Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger

and

editorial network Germany.

"It was very clear that he would be accused of populism and racism and whatever.

He said things.

He has widened the space for debate, ”said the ex-politician.

Merz in the criticism: "controlled debate"?

CDU boss even sees “unexpected encouragement”

The CDU MP Paul Ziemiak even raised allegations against Merz's critics.

Merz never lumped people together in "Lanz", he claimed in a tweet.

The discussion of a “small section” of the debate shows “how debates can be steered online today”.

In an attached - also short - sequence, Merz can be heard, who denounces the "general" denunciation of a lack of integration.

"We have a problem with a small group of foreigners," emphasized the CDU leader.

Merz, on the other hand, even spoke of "encouragement" for his statements in the "Morgenmagazin".

"We had an interesting discussion and I got a very unexpected approval after the show," he said.

"It was a good discussion, but a necessary discussion about what is going wrong in this country."

CDU "on the brink": ZDF meteorologist and Klöckner bicker on Twitter about Merz

But the topic is hardly settled with that.

SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert accused Merz of ignorance of the situation at the next “Lanz” talk.

"What bothers me about this discussion is that distorted images of Berlin are created by people who don't know the city at all or only know the government district," he complained.

Criticism also came from the SPD in Bavaria on Friday.

Even the day after Merz's appearance, the debate made waves on Twitter.

For example, Julia Klöckner – another former CDU federal minister – and the ZDF meteorologist Özden Terli tangled.

Terli had accused the CDU of being "on the brink".

Klöckner provoked criticism of public broadcasting.

Terli pointed out that it was his private opinion.

And reiterated his criticism: "It is irresponsible to conduct the debate in this way, it is also a matter of political calculation, none of it is accidental!" He wrote.

The stumbling block was a post by CDU MP Sepp Müller.

He had defended Merz and at the same time quoted the former CSU chancellor candidate Edmund Stoiber: "Anyone who riots is thrown out, and anyone who doesn't speak German doesn't even come in." Terli reprimanded that as "disgusting".
