Update from January 14, 7:38 a.m .:

Before the Lützerath demo for the preservation of the lignite site occupied by climate activists, the police announced that the houses in Lützerath had been cleared.

The last building in the village was cleared on Friday, the Aachen police said on Friday evening.

However, there are still occupants in tree structures.

According to the information, there are still activists in the tunnel under Lützerath discovered on Thursday.

"Unfortunately, the police are in the village faster than expected," admitted a spokeswoman for the Lützerath initiative in a video published on Twitter.

She announced that the protests would be shifted to the mining area.

The evacuation of the abandoned village on the edge of the Garzweiler opencast mine began on Wednesday.

Thousands of people are expected to demonstrate against the clearing of the settlement near Lützerath on Saturday.

First report from January 13th:

Munich/Keyenberg – A large-scale demonstration against the demolition of the village of Lützerath will take place on Saturday (January 14th) in Keyenberg, just two kilometers away.

Several groups called for the demonstration.

These include Fridays for Future, Greenpeace Germany and the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND).

The climate activist Greta Thunberg, who had arrived the day before, also appeared at the rally.

Around 8,000 participants are expected.

"Prevent eviction!

For climate justice”, this is the motto of the Lützerath demonstration on Saturday.

At 12.00 p.m. the demo train starts from Keyenberg in the direction of the main stage, which is said to be near Lützerath.

The actual rally with program should then take place at 1.30 p.m. at the destination.

The most prominent speech is expected from leading climate activist Greta Thunberg.

"The situation in Lützerath is a huge international embarrassment for the federal government," said Thunberg in advance of the German Press Agency in Cologne.

“People have been defending Lützerath as part of a global justice movement for years.

The fact that people are taking action is a sign of hope," said Thunberg.

The 20-year-old called on all citizens to take part in the demonstration.

Fridays for Future expected participants from 50 cities and 14 federal states.

Shuttle buses are to transport the demonstration participants to and from nearby train stations.

Court verdict: Demonstration for Lützerath may take place - but with restrictions

A court had previously decided on the planned large-scale demonstration.

The police had asked the meeting management of "Climate Justice Movement DE" to move the starting point of the demo north of the Erkelenz district of Keyenberg to 10.30 a.m.

In addition, the police prohibited the carrying of tractors.

On the other hand, the organizer had complained to the administrative court.

The court banned the tractors, but the court in Münster did not agree to a transfer.
