A serious accident occurred on Saturday in the Upper Palatinate.
A pick-up driver triggered a frontal crash – with fatal consequences
Cham – The accident happened on the B20 in the district of Cham at the level of Runding.
On Saturday afternoon (January 14) at around 1:05 p.m., the 61-year-old driver of a Mazda suddenly steered into oncoming traffic for reasons that have not yet been clarified.
A frontal crash occurred on the Regenbrücke near Runding.
Fatal accident in the Cham district: 61-year-old triggers mass crash
The 61-year-old from the Schwandorf district rammed a Ford pick-up at high speed.
A 44-year-old father drove the Ford.
His 8-year-old son was in the back seat.
The force of the impact sent the Mazda back onto its original lane and crashed into a Skoda.
The Skoda driver (33) from the Landshut district was not alone in the car.
Two other occupants were in the vehicle.

First responders called 911.
A major operation was triggered.
Ambulance service, several fire brigades and police arrived.
According to Marco Greil, district fire inspector of the district of Cham, all those involved in the accident had already been freed from the cars when the first fire service vehicle from the Cham fire brigade arrived.
Only the accident driver, the 61-year-old from the Schwandorf district, was trapped in his vehicle.

The 61-year-old was immediately freed from his Mazda with heavy equipment.
But any help came too late for him.
The man died at the scene of the accident.
The 44-year-old driver of the Ford and his 8-year-old son were flown to the Regensburg University Hospital by rescue helicopter with serious injuries.
The B20 was closed for hours for the accident recording and the rescue and rescue measures.

Boy (8) seriously injured - federal road closed for hours - police are looking for witnesses
The 33-year-old and her two passengers were taken to nearby hospitals with moderate injuries.
In total, there were six ambulances, one ambulance, two rescue helicopters and four emergency doctors on the part of the rescue workers, as Tobias Muhr, the rescue service operations manager, says.
The Cham, Chammünster and Kothmaissling fire brigades and the THW were also on site.

The B20 was closed for several hours due to the rescue and recovery measures and the accident recording by an expert.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
Witnesses who observed the accident are asked to contact the investigators at the Cham Police Inspectorate on 09971/85450.
