A corona vaccination can sometimes cause long-lasting symptoms.

We're talking about post-vac syndrome.

But what does it mean?

Berlin – Whether palpitations, headaches or chronic fatigue – all of these long-lasting symptoms can occur after a corona vaccination.

In this case, experts speak of the so-called post-vac syndrome.

But how many people are actually affected?

And what can be done to relieve the pain?

Post-vac syndrome occurs in some people after corona vaccination - similar symptoms to long or post-Covid

Anyone who feels permanently exhausted or constantly complains of headaches associates this with a corona infection in times of the pandemic.

Symptoms that can also occur with long or post-Covid.

But there are also cases in which such symptoms occur after a corona vaccination.

After a corona vaccination, some people complain about post-vac syndrome.

But what does it mean?

In addition to the Berlin Charité, the Marburg University Hospital is one of the central contact points for patients with the post-vac syndrome mentioned at the beginning.

"These are actually identical symptoms to the ones we know from post-Covid patients after an infection," Bernhard Schieffer told

tagesschau.de

.

The cardiologist heads the special outpatient clinic in Marburg and speaks of symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, blood pressure fluctuations, sudden palpitations, blurred vision, persistent headaches and chronic fatigue.

Post Vac Syndrome characterized by palpitations, headaches or chronic fatigue

The symptoms mentioned would occur most frequently in post-vac syndrome, which also affects an 18-year-old from Twistringen.

They are similar to those of post-Covid patients who suffer from health problems after a corona infection.

A phenomenon that is not new.

In rare cases, the same symptoms would also occur with other vaccinations.

However, since many people were vaccinated at the same time during the corona pandemic, the individual cases would become more visible.

So far there is no evidence that after the corona vaccinations the proportion of long-lasting symptoms would be unusually high.

The Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI) had explained this to

tagesschau.de

.

Reference was made to an investigation of international suspected cases from a total of 36 countries.

Post Vac Syndrome leads to 'depletion of the immune system'

The exact causes of post-vac syndrome have not yet been found.

It has already been speculated that a previous infection with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) could be reactivated.

However, Schieffer would observe an escalating immune system in most patients.

"It then takes on a life of its own in the sense of an autoimmune disease," says the head of the special outpatient clinic.

Means: The body just does not manage to resolve a self-induced inflammatory reaction.

And "then a spiral always starts, which in the end leads to an exhaustion of the immune system".

This mainly affects women with a mild immune deficiency.

In the future, Schieffer hopes, risk groups could be defined (more) precisely.

'0.02 percent or a bit higher': Post Vac Syndrome occurs less frequently than Post Covid

The federal government points out that the post-vac syndrome after a corona vaccination has not yet been scientifically defined.

Sometimes the term is used very differently.

Schieffler would, however, experience how much patients suffer until a clear diagnosis is made.

In these moments, "often a burden" would then fall off.

After all, patients are often not taken seriously.

After all: Compared to post-Covid after a corona infection, the post-vac syndrome affects vaccinated people much less frequently.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), ten to 20 percent of those infected are affected after infection with the virus.

In the case of vaccinated people, on the other hand, the number of cases is in the per thousand range, but ultimately it can only be estimated.

"0.02 percent or a bit higher," Schieffer assumes.

A rough estimate that would be based on a report by Biontech/Pfizer, among others.

"It needs proper screening": Extensive care for those affected by post-vac syndrome

The Paul Ehrlich Institute speaks of currently 0.029 percent of those vaccinated who experience serious side effects.

However, only some of the documented cases could actually be related to post-vac syndrome.

At the request of the Union faction, the federal government spoke of 943 suspected cases of post-vac syndrome at the end of December 2022.

Based on the number of people vaccinated, this would correspond to a rate of just 0.001 percent.

Much would also depend on which symptoms after a corona vaccination are assigned to the post-vac syndrome.

The care of those affected, that much is certain, is very time-consuming.

"It needs a real screening," says von Schieffer.

Contact points for long-Covid patients can help with treatment of post-vac syndrome

He and his team at the special outpatient clinic in Marburg would try to stop the inflammatory reaction in the body.

Concrete therapy options are allergy tests, intestinal cleansing and, for example, low-histamine diets, depending on the individual patient.

However, many contact points for long-Covid patients could also help with the treatment of post-vac syndrome.

So away from the special outpatient clinic of the University Hospital Marburg and the Charité Berlin.

However, there are still no guidelines for treating post-vac syndrome.

Further studies looking for the exact cause are important for this.

This could then result in further therapeutic approaches.

As the Paul Ehrlich Institute has already announced, further studies are also being planned.
