XXVI Klemm Prize: a den for queer culture

2023-01-14T09:51:10.243Z

Allusions to trans, porn, sadism and even kitsch abound among the chosen works, consolidating the foundation as an LGBTTIQ+ place of worship. Carlota Beltrame, winner with a political textile work.

Uninterruptedly since 1997, the

Federico Jorge Klemm award

always returns.

In this XXVI edition, the 38 selected works give an account above all of

the validity of painting at the service of abstraction

, figuration, the most

diverse themes

and reinterpretations within its history.

There is also a

certain pre-eminence of the installation

in the whole to organize and combine spatially and conceptually multiple materials and concepts.

The jury, on this occasion made up of Joaquín Barrera,

Adriana Bustos

,

Marcos Kramer

, Nancy Rojas and

Graciela Taquini

, received 1,324 applications from Argentine or resident artists, over 18 years of age (no age limit).

The first acquisition prize (900,000 pesos), which will enter the outstanding patrimony of the Klemm Foundation, was for the work of the Tucuman artist

Carlota Beltrame

(1960) for her work "Revés de plot".

It is about the translation of a documentary photograph into the textile technique of the randa, in white, whose transparencies, lights and shadows, warns

the word Montoneros with its historical and political connotation

adding, from its aesthetics and materiality, diverse layers of cultural and social senses.

"Reverse of the plot", by Carlota Beltrame.

First Prize Acquisition.

The second prize, also an acquisition, for 600,000 pesos, went to

Alberto Passolini

(1968) and the installation

Nadie sabe de lo mío

.

A work between ceramics, paint and vinyl, which appeals to the history of art with the conformation of an ornamental background pattern, the figure of a Renaissance putti and other pieces imbued with eroticism.

The jury's honorable mention went to

Santiago Iturralde

(1975) and the two-dimensional work "The talks about art are almost useless", which in oil, acrylic and pencil highlights the history of these same materials in relation to painting as a reflection and tribute .

Three other non-acquisition mentions, for 150,000 pesos each, went to the oil painting “Antro cuir”, by the young

Carrie Bencardino

(1993), of explicit eroticism;

for the original modular installation

Geminis

, by

Erik Arazi

(1990);

and for that of the Cordovan artist

Marisol San Jorge

(1972) in a combination of objects between curiosity and strangeness.

“The archetypal weight of Federico Klemm turned his space into

a place of worship and reflection on the LGBTTIQ+ culture

, and in this sense, in the works presented and later chosen, allusions to trans, queer, porn, sado abound. and even kitsch in different keys and proposals”, warns

Taquini

in the text about the award.

A room is added where those chosen audiovisual works of video art, installations and digital proposals are displayed.

"Nobody knows about mine", Alberto Passolini, second prize.
