A cousin of Black Lives Matter founder Patrice Kolross died of cardiac arrest last week after Los Angeles police used a Taser repeatedly to restrain him - all in the middle of the street in broad daylight, according to the officer's body camera released yesterday (Sat. ).

Keenan Anderson, 31, a beloved high school teacher, husband and father, was trying to get help after a car accident in which he was involved when officers began chasing him, holding him down and repeatedly taunting him for more than 90 seconds with a Taser as he begged for his life. .

Anderson's death, the third so far this year to die after Los Angeles police officers used excessive force, has sparked renewed calls for police reform.

The Los Angeles Police Department released the edited body camera videos from the three incidents.

Police Chief Michel Moore said he waived the 45-day waiting period before releasing body camera video due to the high public interest.

According to a police statement, an officer, whose name has not been released, encountered Anderson at 3:38 p.m. on Jan. 3 when Anderson pulled him over and asked for help after a car accident.

The officer thought that Anderson "was running in the middle of the road because he was running from something and that he was acting suspiciously," the statement said.

Other people involved in the accident said Anderson caused it, Moore said at a news conference.

He also said Anderson was actually involved in a hit-and-run and that another eyewitness said he tried to steal a car.

The video from the officer's body camera shows the officer at the scene instructing Anderson to move to the side of the road and lean against the wall.

Anderson looks back at the scene of the accident, kneels with his hands up and yells "I didn't mean to, I'm sorry."

After obeying the order to sit down, the officer requests assistance from additional units.

The seven minutes of waiting for assistance were not made public.

After seven minutes, the video shows Anderson standing again and saying he wants to drink some water and make sure more people see him.

"You're putting things on me," he is heard telling the officer, as he tries to walk away from him as the officer tells him to sit down again.

Anderson continues running into the street and crosses a busy intersection, while the officer chases after his motorcycle.

Two more policemen arrive at the scene and block the traffic.

The officers tell Anderson to lie on his stomach.

When he doesn't obey, they push him to the ground and try to restrain him with their body weight.

One officer put his elbow on Anderson's neck.

"Please, please, please, please," Anderson cries at one point.

"They're trying to make me George Floyd," referring to the black man who was killed by a police officer in Minnesota when he put his knee on his neck for more than nine minutes.

In the video, the officers are seen threatening to use a Taser on Anderson at least 12 times before one officer eventually does so.

He fires the taser at least six times in a row, at one point aiming it at Anderson's back for 30 seconds straight.

After using the taser, the officers handcuff Anderson by his hands and feet.

Eight police officers are at the scene at the time.

Paramedics arrived on the scene within a minute of the call, and five minutes later transported Anderson to the local hospital.

He died four hours later, apparently of cardiac arrest.

The official cause of death has not yet been determined.

The Los Angeles Police Department's investigative division has opened an investigation.

Moore said that "only one taser was fired" in the incident, and that after the first time the officer activated the taser, the subsequent times were without electricity.

In addition, Moore said that the Los Angeles Police Department has no limit on the number of times a Taser can be used in such a situation.

Anderson, a resident of Washington, D.C., was visiting family in Los Angeles, Colors told NRP.

She described him as a loving father and fiancé, a man with a big smile and dreams for the future.

He even considered becoming a police officer when he was young, but in the end decided to become a high school English teacher.

A statement from the school said Anderson is the third victim from the community to fall victim to police brutality in the last 65 days.

Two other students died in separate incidents of gun violence.
