Update from January 14, 12:12 p.m .:
The 500-kilo bomb from World War II near the Freiburg University Hospital was successfully defused on Saturday.
All residents could return to their homes and apartments, the city and police said afterwards.
Around 4,000 people in the west of the city had been evacuated and around 150 patients had to be transferred.
The municipality spoke of one of the largest evacuation campaigns in recent decades in the Black Forest metropolis.
The World War II bomb was discovered during construction work.
It was successfully defused on Saturday.

Air bomb in Freiburg: 150 hospital patients have already been evacuated
Update from January 14, 9:00 a.m.:
After a bomb was found in Freiburg during construction work, the evacuation of almost 4,000 residents in the west of the city began.
The police asked people in the morning with loudspeaker announcements to leave their homes and workplaces, a police spokesman said.
Defusing the bomb is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
According to a spokesman on Friday, around 150 patients from the adjacent university hospital have already been transferred to other parts of the hospital.
It is one of the largest evacuation operations in decades.

Munich/Freiburg im Breisgau – On Wednesday (January 11th) a US aircraft bomb from the Second World War was found in Freiburg.
The 500-kilogram bomb is to be defused on Saturday morning.
About 4000 residents have to be evacuated.
Several facilities of the university hospital are also affected.
However, according to the city, the bomb does not pose an acute danger.

The bomb was found on a construction site at the Freiburg University Hospital.
For the defusing, an evacuation of all people within a radius of 500 meters is necessary.
On Saturday from 07.30 a.m. no more people are allowed in buildings.
The affected residents were informed on Friday morning that the area was cordoned off.
The evacuation is said to be one of the largest evacuation operations in recent decades, as the city announced.

Since the university clinic is also affected by the evacuation, it is a major operation, as a city spokesman said.
The clinic for tumor biology and parts of the clinics for ophthalmology, ear, nose and throat medicine and pneumology as well as the neuro center are affected.

Around 150 patients at the clinic will be moved to other buildings or parts of buildings as a precaution, as a spokesman for the university clinic said when asked by the dpa.
This means that the patients remain in the university hospital and do not have to be taken to other hospitals.
Among those affected are around 50 to 60 bedridden people.
Around 15 of them are intensive care patients, the spokesman continued.
The city has set up a support center in hall four of the exhibition center for the people who have been evacuated.
Those affected who have to leave their living space for the time of the defusing can go to the hall from 7.30 a.m.
World War II bombs are found again and again.
It was only in December that an aircraft bomb was found in Geretsried.
