This week, the first asylum seekers moved into the Geretsried middle school gym.

It now serves as accommodation again - there is no end in sight.

Geretsried – The gymnasium of the middle school on Adalbert-Stifter-Strasse is again occupied by refugees.

A privacy fence was erected around the entrance area of the hall.

Security dressed in black is on site.

A "district office" was set up in the upper area of the hall between the changing rooms and sanitary facilities.

You see women and men standing outside and talking.

According to district office press spokeswoman Marlis Peischer, 50 refugees arrived in Geretsried on Tuesday.

They come mainly from Turkey and Yemen.

These are men traveling alone and families.

The gym had been closed since December because the district had prepared everything there for the arrival of people.

The government of Upper Bavaria is in the process of distributing the asylum seekers, who are arriving in large numbers, to the districts.

The city of Geretsried is prepared for admission

The city of Geretsried is prepared to be admitted again.

According to the city council officer for social affairs, inclusion and integration, Sabine Lorenz (CSU), 600 refugees are currently living in Geretsried, divided between the temporary accommodation of the Upper Bavarian government on Jahnstraße, the Filigran-Halle on Blumenstraße and apartments.

200 people are Afghan local workers.

In addition to the 50 new refugees, more refugees are expected, says the city councilwoman: "There are more people than in 2015 who are fleeing to Germany at the moment.

Only this time hardly anyone talks about it”.

As reported, District Administrator Josef Niedermaier had urgently asked all 21 district municipalities for their help with the accommodation.

"But we're at the limit in terms of space and personnel," Lorenz makes clear.

The integration officer is “rejoiced” that the city council has extended the contract with the “Integration aktiv” coordination office, which is part of the youth and social work association, until the end of 2023.

About 150 volunteers in the circle of helpers

The manager Hannah Schreyer reports that around 150 voluntary women and men from the asylum helpers' group are ready to support the newly arrived asylum seekers.

One of the first actions will be a donation bazaar with warm winter clothing on January 28th.

The location has not yet been determined.

Schreyer: “The circle of helpers is involved in a variety of ways.

We will see where support is needed.” More volunteers are welcome.

According to Sabine Lorenz, Hannah Schreyer urgently needs reinforcement as a full-time employee.

Lorenz sees the government of Upper Bavaria as having a duty.

Even the one employee who takes care of the Afghan local staff on an hourly basis is “far too few”.

These people would stay for the long term.

You have to pay special attention to them, says Lorenz.

She expressly praises the solidarity of the people of Geretsried.

However, she fears that this could decrease in the long run.

“There are simply too many people that we have to take care of and that we also want to integrate”.

TuS-Geretsried shows solidarity.

Next to the middle school, the sports club is the largest user of the gym.

The basketball, volleyball and handball players and in winter the track and field athletes train there.

They were all redistributed to the other municipal halls and to the triple hall for high school and secondary school at the school center newly built by the district.

The other departments simply limited their training times a bit so that “no sport is particularly disadvantaged”, as TuS boss Mirko Naumann explains.

The association had already sat down at the beginning of December to find fair solutions for everyone.

"Incredibly well-functioning network"

The three schools at the school center also try to share the district gymnasium as much as possible.

Experience has been gained since the first quartering of refugees and Ukrainians last year.

Marlis Peischer cannot say how long the middle school gym will remain occupied.

But she expects it to last longer.

“There is rarely the opportunity to accommodate a large number of people in other facilities and apartments at the same time.

More and more people who have fled are being accommodated in a gym first and then for a longer period of time," writes the spokeswoman.

In April of last year, the secondary school gym offered short-term shelter to Ukrainian war refugees, mostly women and children.

They are now all privately accommodated, says Sabine Lorenz: “An incredibly well-functioning network has formed there”.

People who have recently fled the Ukraine are still being admitted to the multi-purpose hall in Wolfratshausen-Farchet.
