Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox protested this evening (Sunday) in the Geula neighborhood in Jerusalem, in front of a cell phone store that sells non-kosher phones.

Policemen who arrived at the scene blocked the demonstrators' way to the store, which they wanted to damage;

In response, the protesters pushed the police officers, sprayed them with pepper spray and threw eggs at them.

The police dispersed the protestors with dispersal measures and repulsed them with horses.

Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir turned to Commissioner Kobi Shabtai, and claimed that there are documents showing police violence against the demonstrators. Ben Gvir asked Shabtai to look into the issue and get the details of the incident and the full picture of the situation from the scene.

Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox have been participating in demonstrations and resorting to violence against cell phone shops in the capital for the past year.

These are leading a fight against cell phone stores, which are not willing to sell only kosher phones without internet, apps or messaging.

The stores receiving the threats are stores located in ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods, but their owners refuse to receive a kosher business certificate that would oblige them to sell only kosher phones and prohibit them from selling smart phones.

Among other things, they claim that the qualification for stores also makes the cost of the devices more expensive and they prefer to give up on that and sell the devices at a cheaper price.

Because of this, they suffer threats, harassment, violence and destruction of property, this in order to try to subdue them to accept the demands.
