Legendary Oscar-winning actor Joe Pesci has some notable hallmarks, including his small stature, bird mouth and rugged features, but Pesci wasn't always like this.
In fact,
as a young man he wasn't even interested in being an actor.
His future was in music.
While growing up in Newark, New Jersey, Pesci became involved in the
doo-wop
scene that was popular in the 1950s.
The actor was friends with a local star named Francesco Stephen Castelluccio.
Although Castelluccio was almost a decade older than him,
Pesci was close enough to the singer to introduce him to his childhood friend, Bob Gaudio
.

The actor who wanted to be a musician in the sixties.
By this time, Castelluccio had changed his name to Frankie Valli and, with Gaudio, would form, in 1960,
the band,
The Four Seasons
in 1960.
The path through the music of Joe Pesci
Also in the 1960s,
Pesci was singing and playing guitar in local groups in New York and New Jersey
.
For a brief stint, the Casino actor was guitarist for
Joe Dee and the Starlighters
, who had previously scored a US number one hit with the song
Peppermint Twist
.
Finally,
Pesci got his own chance to record an album in 1968
.
But he had a particularity, since he changed his name to Joe Ritchie.
Under his new identity, the actor recorded an album of pop standards titled
Little Joe Sure Can Sing!
Joe Pesci with Robert DeNiro in "The Irishman."
Released on Brunswick Records, the record is more in keeping with the kind of Brill Building pop music that was still filtering out of New York at the time.
The big difference was that Pesci wanted to show her love for The Beatles.
Joe Pesci's love for the
Beatles
Little Joe Sure Can Sing!
includes three songs written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney:
'Got to Get You Into My Life'
,
'Fixing a Hole'
and
'The Fool on the Hill'
.
Pesci was obviously a McCartney fan.
The Fool On The Hill
The album is rounded out by other standards of the time, such as
To Love Somebody
and
And the Sun Will Shine
, by The Bee Gees.
Pesci never quite gave up her singing career.
Once his success in the movies was consolidated, he returned to the studio to record
Vincent LaGuardia Gambini Sings Just For You
, a jazz album in which he also raps the songs
Yo Cousin Vinnie
and
Wise Guy.
Pesci even released an album,
Still Singing
, in 2019.
Joe Pesci: an extraordinary actor
Pesci earned an Oscar nomination in 1980 for his performance in
Raging Bull
, won a supporting actor award for
Goodfellas
in 1991, and appeared in blockbuster films like
Casino
.
"The Irishman" by Martin Scorsese.
The movie where Joe Pesci had a part.
His last major role was in 2006 in
The Good Shepherd
, one of the movies directed by Robert De Niro.
She also later starred in the poorly received
Love Ranch
opposite Helen Mirren in 2010.
He was about to appear in the biopic, 2018's
Gotti
, even claiming to have put on 70 pounds to play mob hitman Angelo Ruggiero, but the role was cut and Pesci sued the production for $3 million.
The actor retired from the industry in 1999 to focus on his musical career and had a part in The Irishman.
