(CNN) --

The death toll from a Russian missile attack on an apartment building in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro has risen to 29, according to Valentyn Reznichenko, head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional military administration.

At least 73 people were injured in the attack, 30 of them still in hospital, Reznichenko said in a post on his official Telegram page on Sunday.

At least 12 of the injured at the hospital are in critical condition, he said.

“This afternoon, a 27-year-old woman was pulled from the rubble,” Reznichenko continued.

“She is in intensive care with severe hypothermia.

The doctors are fighting for her life.

According to Reznichenko, 39 residents of the apartment building were rescued from the rubble.

“The fate of more than 40 people is unknown,” she added.

Reznichenko said that firefighters finally extinguished the fire that started in the building as a result of the attack and "approximately half of the structures destroyed by the Russian attack have already been dismantled."

The rescue operation is ongoing with more than 550 rescuers, police, doctors, volunteers working "non-stop", the official added.

Search and rescue operations have continued "round the clock," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier, a day after missiles and explosions were heard across the country.

“We continue to fight for every life,” Zelensky said.

The president added that 72 apartments were destroyed and more than 230 apartments were damaged.

Zelensky said earlier that "dozens" of people, including a 3-year-old girl, were rescued from the building despite most floors being "vandalized" in the attack.

The Ukrainian Air Force said the Russian missile fired at the apartment block in Dnipro was a Kh-22, the same type that hit a busy shopping mall in central Ukraine last summer.

Yurii Ihnat, a spokesman for the Ukrainian air force, said the Kh-22 "was fired from a Tu-22M3 long-range bomber, launched from the area near Kursk and the Azov Sea."

"There were a total of five launches of these missiles," Ihnat said.

The Kh-22 is an older type of cruise missile that is less accurate than most modern missiles.

attack on the capital

Elsewhere, missiles and explosions were heard everywhere from Lviv in the west;

Kharkiv in the northeast;

Zaporizhia and Dnipro in the southeast;

Myokaliv in the south;

and Kharkiv in the northeast, authorities said.

Kyiv authorities said there was an "attack on the capital."

The explosions were heard at 6 am local time, according to the head of the Kyiv region's military administration, Oleksiy Kuleba.

Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said the attacks hit the east bank of the city, where several electrical installations were located.

CNN could not immediately verify the exact locations of the explosions.

A thick fog covered much of the city.

However, Oleksandr Pavliuk, a Kyiv-based commander in the Ukrainian army, said the explosions in the capital were not caused by Russian strikes.

“The explosions are not related to the threat from the air or air defense, as well as any military action,” Pavliuk wrote on the encrypted social media app Telegram.

“If there was a threat, you would have heard the alarm.

The cause of the explosions will be reported separately."

"Fierce fighting" in Soledar

On the battlefield, all eyes are on Soledar, a city of little strategic value that Russia is trying to retake in the hope that it will deliver a symbolic victory for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Several Ukrainian army units said Soledar was still the scene of "fierce fighting."

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that its forces took control of the city, though Kyiv has denied this.
