The municipal company Markt Schwaben and the company Magna GmbH want to use waste heat from industrial production for the local district heating network.

Now the cooperation has been marked out.

Markt Schwaben – Using industrial waste heat for energy supply – this is the path the municipal company Markt Schwaben (KUMS) and Magna BDW Technologies GmbH want to take in the Wiegenfeld industrial park.

A corresponding declaration of intent was signed on Thursday afternoon.

The project: Waste heat generated during production in the aluminum die-casting plant is partly fed into the KUMS district heating network and partly used by the company itself.

A feasibility study that was prepared for this shows consistently positive results, announced KUMS board member Bernhard Wagner and Magna production manager Markus Hirschvogel at a press conference.

A lot of heat is generated in the die-casting plant, which up until now has simply been lost

“The main effect lies in the use of currently untapped heat sources in the aluminum die-casting plant.

This is already good for the environment and at the same time is an essential part of the long-term CO2 strategy of both contractual partners.

Magna wants to use the intended heat dissipation to the KUMS to further consolidate the Markt Schwaben location and "to make a contribution to the sustainable, secure district heating supply of the community".

According to KUMS board member Wagner, the supply capacities could be further expanded with Magna's industrial waste heat (which has so far gone unused) and the southern commercial area, in which Magna is located, among other things, could be developed more easily.

"The potential amount of waste heat of 2.8 GWh from Magna corresponds to around 40 percent of the KUMS heat output."

Magna BDW Technologies GmbH is a subsidiary of the global Magna Group.

Aluminum die-cast parts for the automotive industry are developed and produced on the large site at Im Wiegenfeld 10.

The joint project aims to improve the CO2 balance and reduce the use of external energy.

Waste heat can be an important component in the energy mix of KUMS

Wagner sees the use of industrial waste heat as a further component in the energy mix of the KUMS - together with the existing combined heat and power plant and the decided expansion into an innovative combined heat and power system, consisting of an air heat pump, photovoltaics and other heat storage systems (we reported).

"With the use of waste heat, the use of primary energy could be further reduced," says the KUMS board member.

In addition, this reduces CO2 emissions during the transformation to climate-neutral heat supply.

With the declaration of intent, KUMS and Magna will start working together immediately for the fastest possible implementation.

In the next steps, it will be examined how the cooperation can be realized technically and economically.

According to Wagner, the first results should be available by mid-2023.
