Who wants to become a raccoon godfather in Munich?

The sanctuary for reptiles reports on its new resident.

Munich – “Our newest guest looks out of his hiding place a little shyly and cautiously sniffs us”, the sanctuary for reptiles begins its contribution.

The Munich facility provides information on Facebook about the eventful history of the new resident.

A little raccoon has found refuge in the sanctuary.

Raccoon recorded in Munich: "Found orphaned in the garden as a baby"

He comes from an animal shelter where he has lived since the summer of 2022.

"Previously, as a baby, he was found orphaned in a garden and handed over to the animal welfare association," reads the post, which includes two photos of the raccoon.

If there is still a place available, the rescue center will be happy to help out in such cases.

But things are getting cramped in the premises not far from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU): "Unfortunately, we are now working at full capacity with 14 raccoons." Some of the young animals will have to be castrated in the near future, and numerous vaccinations are due.

The registered association bears the costs for this.

Munich: sanctuary for reptiles is looking for sponsors for raccoons

How Munich residents can support?

"We are happy to look for sponsors for our raccoons who will help us care for the curious, furry four-legged friends," says the Facebook post, under which users share emotional assessments.

"I think the fate of the raccoons is particularly dramatic, since they are very often killed as an invasive species. Thank you for taking pity on these poor animals," writes a woman to the sanctuary.

Can raccoons actually be given to private households?

Basically yes.

The procedure is part of an EU regulation.

There is a lot of information about this on the internet, as a woman from Munich reports: “Of course you have to meet the conditions from the mammal report, which fortunately now also has a few requirements.

In principle, admission into private households is better outside of Bavaria than here.” However, complete “newcomers” should have little chance of success with an application.

The animal shelter in Munich is looking for an experienced owner: German shepherd male Odin worked as a guard dog, which is strongly reflected in his behavior.
