An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra this morning, without reports of casualties.
The news agency AFP quoted the US Geological Survey as saying: The earthquake struck at a depth of 37 kilometers, and its epicenter was about 48 kilometers southeast of the city of Singkil in the Indonesian province of Aceh.
A spokesman for the Indonesian Disaster Management Agency said: The earthquake caused panic, and the population felt it, between 3 to 10 seconds, in four regions in Aceh and North Sumatra province, noting that there were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage. .
In turn, the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics said: There is no threat of a tsunami.
Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates meet and their friction leads to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
