An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale rocked the Aizu Islands in Honshu Prefecture, Japan today, without immediate reports of damage or the formation of a tsunami.

Xinhua news agency quoted the US Geological Survey as saying: The quake struck at a depth of 409 kilometers, and its epicenter was at 29.05 degrees north latitude and 139.34 degrees east longitude.

Japan is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where seismic and volcanic activities abound.

In 2011, the country witnessed the largest environmental disaster after a strong earthquake measuring 9 degrees on the Richter scale caused a huge number of victims and a tsunami wave that led to explosions in the reactors of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which doubled the levels of radiation in the air surrounding the station.
