Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, in consultation with Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, decided this evening (Monday) on the appointment of Rabbi Yehuda Amichai, head of the Torah and Haaretz Institute, as head of the conversion unit.
In the past, Rabbi Amichai served as the chairman of the Shemita Committee in the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, as the rabbi of the Carmel moshav, as the head of the Yeshiva in Beit HaGadi and as a judge at the Court of Taxes in Kiryat Arba.
This is an achievement for Smotrich, when the appointment is from among the religious-nationalist sector, while the government is dominated by an ultra-Orthodox majority.
