Austin Butler & Kaia Gerber: Brief History of Romance

Millions of people around the world can't be blamed for wondering if Austin Butler has a girlfriend.

From the start of his career, the Californian actor embodied heartthrob status, from playing the boy next door to the clichéd bad boy who turns out to be a softy at heart.

Combine that with the fact that in real life, Butler's work ethic and glowing recommendations from his peers almost cement him as the ultimate game.

Along with Butler's eight-year relationship with Vanessa Hugdens, the 'Elvis' star has had several high-profile romances, but unlike many other celebs, his breakups have been kept out of the public eye.

Now, he is in a happy relationship with the famous model Kaia Gerber, and it seems that the couple is stronger than ever.

Here, we look back at their romance, plus Butler's other relationships (confirmed and rumored) over the years.

VANESSA HUDGENS: 2011-2020

Fans were elated when they saw Butler and Vanessa Hudgens kiss in September 2011, but at the time, their reps denied they were in a relationship.

Somehow, the couple continued to keep their romance under wraps (despite many developing rumors) before going public three years later, in 2014, when Hudgens called Butler the "love of my life" at a birthday celebration.

The couple hit numerous red carpets together, and Hudgens is even said to have been a key factor behind Butler's decision to take on the huge role of playing Elvis Presley in the upcoming Baz Luhrmann biopic.

Sadly, in 2020, the couple broke up.

Neither party publicly addressed the breakup at the time, but while promoting Elvis in May 2022, Butler gave a respective response when asked by British GQ what happened.

"Life is full of change, and you have to find a way to constantly evolve and grow," he said.

OLIVIA DE JONGE: 2020

This romance was never confirmed so take it with a grain of salt, but it was said Butler and his Elvis co-star Olivia DeJonge, who played his on-screen wife Priscilla Presley, actually dated during filming in Australia.

The couple was reportedly seen embracing in a movie theater, but neither Butler nor DeJonge mentioned their rumored romance in public.

Speaking with Marie Claire Australia in June 2022, Elvis director Baz Luhrmann described how the pair had really struggled to build chemistry when filming began.

"At first we couldn't find it, so one Friday afternoon we all had gin and tonics and I got out the camera. I started filming them like it was a home movie, just Austin and Olivia talking and laughing and having fun."

Outside of that, they found a real connection through the character," she explained.

True or not, either way, it wasn't meant to be for actors.

LILY ROSE DEPP: 2021

In August 2021, Butler was seen in London with French-American model and actress Lily-Rose Depp.

The couple made it clear that there was more than friendship between them, because, lo and behold, viral images revealed that they were kissing.

Unfortunately, neither Butler nor Depp ever commented on the romance, and things seem to have been very short-lived anyway.

Why?

Because it wasn't long before Butler's new romance was confirmed.

KAIA GERBER: 2021—NOW

Yes, Butler and model Kaia Gerber had fans in a tailspin when their romance was first rumored in December 2021.

First, they were spotted attending an early morning yoga class in Los Angeles.

Then, in February 2022, the couple were photographed again looking very cozy as they left Erewhon Market in Los Angeles, and then again while walking Austin's dog through West Hollywood's Tree People Park.

Later, a source exclusively confirmed to E!

that the couple keep things "super casual" and just "enjoy hanging out."

But things took a serious turn in May 2022 when Butler and Gerber attended the Met Gala.

Although they arrived separately, the couple bonded on the red carpet and were photographed together sharing a moment.

Yes, it's love.

Later that month, the couple was photographed together once more while Butler was promoting his new movie at the Cannes Film Festival.

As they were surrounded by swarms of people on the red carpet, no one could miss the moment when they held each other's faces and shared a kiss, this is how a romance goes public.

Since then, the couple attended numerous red carpet events and were spotted on numerous date nights.

But in January 2023, Butler attended the Golden Globes with a non-Gerber date.

Not to worry though... her friend of hers from the night of hers was actually her older sister, Ashley Butler.

The actor told Entertainment Tonight that the decision of who would join him was "difficult," but "she's my only sister, so it's going to be nice to be with her."

Page Six also confirmed that Butler and Kaia were still together several days before the Globes, with an eyewitness telling the publication that they had seen the couple "huddled in a corner at a dinner party earlier in the week. Smooth sailing by the moment.
