A car crashed into the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin late Sunday evening.
Firefighters found a man dead in the car.
Update from January 16, 12:42 p.m .:
After the accident at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, the police have now published more information.
The car drove towards the landmark in the center of Berlin at high speed.
Around 11:30 p.m., the dark limousine crashed into one of the massive stone pillars of the gate, according to the police.
The car was completely destroyed, the front half was crushed by the violent impact.
The 26-year-old driver was probably dead immediately. Apparently he was alone in the car, no other people were injured, the police said.
According to the information, the driver raced towards the Brandenburg Gate coming from the east with the car via the central boulevard Unter den Linden.
Then he drove onto Pariser Platz, which was actually closed to public traffic, in front of the Hotel Adlon.
He hit a curb with his right front wheel.
The tire lost air, the car steered to the left and, according to the police, rammed the second column from the right.
A restorer assessed the damage to the Berlin landmark on Monday.

A paramedic from an ambulance that happened to be nearby wanted to provide first aid, but had to stop because the car began to smoke.
The fire brigade, which arrived shortly afterwards, could only rescue the 26-year-old driver dead from the wreck.
The exact background to the incident has not yet been disclosed.

A car crashed into a pillar of the Brandenburg Gate.
The forces found a dead man in the wreck.
Many questions are still unanswered.
After a car drove into a pillar of the structure, firefighters found a dead man in the car, a police spokesman said early Monday morning (January 16).
Other people would most likely not have been in the car, one is “relatively sure”.
"According to initial findings, no other people were harmed," the police later said on Twitter.
During the night, investigators secured traces at the scene of the incident on Pariser Platz in the Mitte district.

The car – a dark vehicle with a notchback – was reported to have crashed into the famous landmark on Sunday evening, January 15, around 11:30 p.m. coming from the central boulevard Unter den Linden.
The badly damaged vehicle came to a standstill wedged between two pillars of the gate.
Black marks and minor chips were visible on the massive pillars.
It was initially unclear how fast the car was, as was the identity of the driver and the background to the incident.

According to the fire department, 30 emergency services were on site.
A screen was erected around the car wreck.
