The Federal Association of Consumers (vzbv) demands that train passengers should be compensated for delays of 30 minutes or more.

She gets support.

Last year, Deutsche Bahn was less punctual than it had been in ten years - almost every third long-distance train arrived late at the station.

Things are looking better for local transport: Here, the punctuality rate fluctuated between 88.5 percent and 95.5 percent over the months.

Deutsche Bahn cites the outdated and scarce infrastructure, intensive construction work and rapidly growing traffic growth from the second quarter as reasons - probably with regard to the 9-euro ticket.

In recent years, however, the punctuality statistics of the railways have continued to deteriorate.

"If delays are increasing now, then the train should pay compensation from a delay of 30 minutes, not just from an hour," says Ramona Pop, head of the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations (vzbv).

"That would also be an incentive for the train to be more punctual."

The consumer advice center has also summarized your initiative in a message.

Compensation is possible, for example, in the form of a travel voucher, it says.

"Bottlenecks in the rail infrastructure will continue to demand a lot of patience from passengers in the years to come," says Pop.

"In order not to overstrain these, it is important to compensate rail customers appropriately in the event of disruptions and to enable them to continue their journey with all available means.

That would also be in the interest of the mobility turnaround.”

The consumer advocates receive support from the Federal Ministry for Consumer Protection.

"Money vouchers, even in the case of delays of less than an hour, can be a strong signal for the customer friendliness of the railways," a spokeswoman confirmed

A consumer-friendly and sustainable turnaround in mobility is only possible with the help of reliable train services.

Deutsche Bahn: When will delays be compensated?

So far, rail passengers only have a right to compensation if the delay is more than 60 minutes.

In this case, a refund of 25 percent of the ticket price is possible.

In the case of a two-hour delay, it is 50 percent.

Compensation amounts below 4 euros will not be paid out.

The consumer advice center recommends rail customers to have a delay certificate issued in the train or station.

Travelers can apply for compensation for online tickets via the “DB Navigator” app.
