It would be a gigantic step in electric mobility: In Erlangen, researchers are testing an electric highway for inductive charging of electric cars.

Erlangen – A stubborn criticism of e-cars is their batteries, which have an ever-increasing capacity and, as a result, a limited range.

Although continuous progress is being made here, e-cars do not yet come close to combustion engines in terms of range.

In addition, there is the general question of the store – special wall switches are required here, which must either be installed in the garage at home or used in public parking lots.

Researchers at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg are currently working on a solution - and are already planning tests.

The state capital of Bavaria is at the top: why Munich has the most electric cars.

The electric highway: inductive charging for e-cars

The technology surrounding electric cars is constantly advancing.

Manufacturers are also making great progress in inductive charging.

In principle, it works like a smartphone - the vehicle is charged solely by contact, a cable is no longer necessary.

Researchers at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg are now planning a test track on a motorway in northern Bavaria to test inductive charging while driving.

The theory could be straight out of a sci-fi movie: A car charges while it's driving.

The location constraint when charging, refueling, range limitation - these would be terms of the past.

Cars and trucks could be charged inductively via coils under the road surface.

The aim of the project is "to establish a standard for the manufacture of the coils and their installation in the street," explained team leader Alexander Kühl from the Chair of Factory Automation on Monday in Erlangen.

Ambitious project with funding: The goal is series production

With inductive charging on the road, coils in the pavement generate a magnetic field that generates a counter-voltage via a coil in the vehicle - soon up to 125 kilowatts of power can be transmitted in this way.

However, there is still a long way to go before series production.

Initially, the planners want to put a test track in northern Bavaria into operation in mid-2025.

Exactly where has not yet been decided, the highway administration also makes this dependent on where the road surface has to be renewed anyway.

But the project is solid.

The partners include VIA IMC, Autobahn GmbH, Electreon, Risomat and the TH Nuremberg.

Investments of eight million euros are planned.

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection.
