The death toll from a Russian missile strike on an apartment block in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro has risen to 36, including two children, according to the Ukrainian National Police.

"The rubble of a high-rise building hit by a Russian missile is still being dismantled in Dnipro," police said on Telegram on Monday, adding that 75 people were injured in the attack.

Search and rescue operations continue and 39 people have been rescued so far.

A CNN crew on the ground in Dnipro, at the site of the apartment block attack on Saturday, reported air-raid sirens early Monday morning.

Russian Claims

: Also on Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the attack was the result of counter-missile and air defense.

In response to a question about the attack, Peskov said that the Russian Armed Forces only strike "against military targets, whether overt or covert," and not against residential buildings.

Some context: On Sunday, the Ukrainian Armed Forces Air Force Command said there was "no doubt" that a Russian Kh-22 missile had been used in the attack.

Originally designed as an anti-ship missile, the Kh-22 is an older and less accurate weapon than most modern missiles.

"The Ukrainian Armed Forces lack the firepower to shoot down these types of missiles," the Ukrainian command said on Facebook.

"Since the beginning of Russia's military aggression, more than 210 missiles of this type have been launched against the territory of Ukraine. None of them have been shot down by our air defense systems."

CNN reported last June that a Kh-22 missile hit a shopping center in Kremenchuk, in central Ukraine, killing at least 18 people.

Three rockets hit Donetsk in eastern Ukraine early Monday, the head of the Russian-backed city administration said.

In a Telegram message, Alexei Kulemzin said that a shopping complex, a pharmacy, a meat packing plant and a residential building in the Kalininsky district were damaged as a result of the attack.

Search and rescue operations are underway and no casualties have been reported so far, Kulemzin added.

Remember: the city of Donetsk has been in the hands of Moscow-backed separatists since 2014. Moscow has considered it Russian territory since it claimed last year, in violation of international law, that it had annexed the entire Donetsk region, including about 40% of it. which is outside of Russian control.

Fighting for the beleaguered eastern city of Soledar continues, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his late-night speech on Sunday.

"The battle for Soledar, for Bakhmut, for the entire Donetsk region, for the Luhansk region continues without respite, without stopping," Zelensky said, referring to the eastern territories that have been the scene of some of the fiercest fighting in the conflict. .

Russia claims its forces have taken Soledar after weeks of brutal fighting, which Kyiv has denied.

The leader of the Wagner mercenary group has claimed most of the fighting on the side of Moscow and has also claimed victory there.

Ukrainian authorities reported that "heavy fighting" was taking place in the city on Saturday.
