Rescue teams searched overnight for survivors in the rubble of an apartment building hit by a Russian missile in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, Ukrainian authorities said on Sunday, as the search continued for the people buried in the rubble.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy offered his "condolences to the family and friends" of the victims and reported in a Telegram message that a child was among those killed in the attack on the south-central Ukrainian city.

"At all hours.

We continue to fight for every life,” she stated.

The death toll rose to 40, authorities said Monday, while at least 75 people were injured and another 30 remain missing.

Kyrylo Tymoshenko, a senior official in Zelenskyy's office, said in a separate message on his Telegram channel that 72 apartments were destroyed in the attack and 164 were damaged.

Work at the scene was "in progress".

“It is necessary to relocate the residents of at least 236 apartments, that is, more than 400 people who lived in and around this building,” he said, adding that more than 500 people were helping with the rescue efforts.

Timoshenko also said 21 people had been killed in the attack, which came as many Ukrainians were observing the traditional Old New Year and Orthodox New Year.

NBC News, sister network to Noticias Telemundo, has not been able to independently verify the death toll.

Emergency personnel reported early Sunday that cries for help could be heard from people trapped under piles of rubble, but in sub-zero temperatures rescuers faced a race against time to extricate them from the rubble.

During a minute of silence in a house destroyed by shelling, rescuers heard a woman and managed to pull her out of the rubble, Ukrainian Interior Minister Denys Monastyrskyi said in a Telegram message.

Authorities warned that the shelling - the biggest in Russia in two weeks - would cut power in the capital and across large parts of the country this week.

In Kharkiv, the metro suspended its operations amid the attacks and regional authorities urged residents to seek shelter.

The shelling continued on Sunday, when the Ukrainian military command declared that Russia had launched three airstrikes, 57 missile attacks and 69 attacks with heavy weapons rocket salvo systems on Sunday.

Ukrainian forces shot down 26.

The Kremlin did not comment on the attacks on Saturday or Sunday.

Separately, there were conflicting reports about the fate of the disputed salt town of Soledar in eastern Ukraine.

Russian forces claimed to have captured the city on Friday with the help of the Wagner Group, a private military force.

It would be a rare victory for the Kremlin as the first year approaches since it invaded Ukraine in late February, with little success on the battlefield.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Hanna Malyar on Saturday denied reports about the fall of Soledar and said that "fierce battles" for the city continued.
