Some pallets were set on fire and 600 hectares of forest were burned in the GBA: they found dead animals

2023-01-16T22:09:47.221Z

It happened in the Ciudad Evita Ecological Reserve, where neighbors and an NGO assure that this was the origin of the fire. To control it, firefighters worked from Friday to Sunday.

A major fire, apparently

generated by someone's irresponsibility

, burned a very large part of the Ciudad Evita Ecological Reserve, a

forest of unusual size in an urban area

, and that residents and an NGO in the area take care of and ask them to protect for law.

According to a report by the

La Matanza Volunteer Firefighters

, who with the collaboration of bodies from neighboring districts managed to control the flames with great effort, it is stipulated that there were some "

600 hectares of grassland and forest burning."

But there is something else: the death of numerous animals in the place was confirmed.

Although the La Matanza Volunteer Headquarters reported that

the causes

that gave rise to the fire

could not be

clearly established "because

everything was on fire

", from the civil association RENACE (Ciudad Evita Nature Reserve), they assured

Clarín

that "The neighbors formally denounced having seen a man light some pallets near his home and abandon them."

Twelve fire crews worked for almost three days to control the flames.

As on other occasions -it is not the first time-, it was people from the area who on the morning of Friday, January 13, detected the fire and tried to extinguish it in the first instance, while notifying the fire brigade.

It was at this time that two female neighbors reportedly saw a flaming hare running.

Beyond the neighborhood effort,

there was not much time

for anything.

The heat, the wind and the drought were the factors that added to the irresponsibility and the lack of controls in the place, despite the insistence of the neighbors, according to what they maintain with the neighborhood NGO that for years has mobilized to ask that the place be protected by law, in addition to organizing activities that seek to raise awareness and use it, so that it does not end up usurped.

“It is

a real disaster.

The wind distributed the fire to different areas and several hectares are being affected," the NGO reported on the afternoon of the fire, when people and firefighters were fighting to control the situation.

"Some neighbors are

collaborating with water drums

to cool some areas. How much fauna will have died? It is very painful, not only because of the animals, but because of all the burned vegetation. We will have to take care and give time for it to regenerate," they lamented. .

Only on Sunday morning was the evaluation made by the Volunteers officially known, in a statement where they define what happened as a "fire of enormous proportions."

Twelve teams and about 50 firefighters

"From the BVM Corps Headquarters it is announced that after almost three days of work, a forest fire of enormous proportions was controlled last Friday (January 13) at noon. Currently the incident is is under control and the staff is guarding the ashes to prevent new outbreaks," the report dated Sunday, January 15, begins.

Smoke began to be seen from afar around noon on Friday, when the fire was spreading by wind and drought.

"The fire developed in the ecological reserve of Ciudad Evita where it is estimated that it affected some 600 hectares of forest and grasslands. It is taken as a reference from Av. Cristiania and Route 21 to the Querandíes roundabout," the firefighters add.

"The extinction tasks were extremely complicated due to the existing climatic conditions, strong winds, high temperatures and the great existing drought," they detailed.

As they specify, to control the situation it was necessary the work of 10 crews from detachments 1,2,3,4 and the Central Headquarters of La Matanza.

"Company 15 of the Northern Region was also requested to collaborate, who assisted with forest mobiles from the Merlo Fire Department and the Mariano Acosta Fire Department," they specified.

During Saturday "an approximate total" of 50 firefighters participated in the operation.

It was not until Sunday morning, when the statement was issued, that the situation was under control, although not fully resolved.

At that time, an "ash guard" had been set up and the Volunteers anticipated that "if it continues like this, in the afternoon there is a chance that the incident will be extinguished."

Between Friday, Saturday and Sunday, about 50 firefighters worked to control the situation.

"We congratulate the personnel who worked in the area without interruption, managing to control a forest fire, a phenomenon that, if not attacked with precise planning and structure, could have taken on other dimensions," the report added at the end.

A hare running on fire

The residents of the area are usually very attentive to everything that happens in this space, which they feel is permanently in danger and they want to protect it.

In fact, as it turned out, it was two women who live in the area who saw the lit pallets.

Both approached with backpacks filled with water and tried to extinguish the flames.

It was at that moment when "they saw how a hare ran with part of its body on fire," according to what they told Clarín from the RENACER Association.

The animal could not be saved, and immediately the neighbors realized that it was too late to control the situation.

After noon there were already many people from the neighborhood who were organizing in the place to try to put out the fire and the firefighters were alerted, who arrived at the scene minutes later.

As explained by RENACE, municipal Civil Defense agents also attended.
