Hertzi Halevi Yehal will officially assume the position of Chief of Staff today (Monday). Halevi, who will become the 23rd Chief of Staff, grew up in Jerusalem and attended a religious high school in the city.

He enlisted in the IDF in 1985 and after serving in the Nahal nuclear unit in a kibbutz, he volunteered for the paratrooper brigade and served in the Nahal parachute battalion. He advanced in the brigade to the position of commander of the anti-tank company, which he commanded in the fighting in southern Lebanon.

Halevi lives in the Oranim village near Modi'in, married to Sharon and the father of four.

He holds a bachelor's degree in philosophy and business administration from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and a master's degree in national resource management from the National Security University in Washington.

His operational experience in the security zone earned him a reputation as a cold-blooded and brave commander, which prompted the former commander of the General Staff patrol, Doron Avital, to integrate him as a training officer in the unit.

After that, the Levi moved to lead complex operations deep in enemy territory.

He continued to integrate into the special operations system of the Intelligence Division, in secret units.

The exchange of chiefs of staff - this is how it will happen

  • At 10:00 two cheers will be heard by the IDF orchestra.

  • After that, the incoming Chief of Staff will be awarded the rank of Brigadier General by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defense

  • So, Chief of Staff Ness will be transferred from Kochavi to Levi

A cold commander.

Unusually for an officer who grew up outside the unit, Halevi reached the position of deputy commander of a General Staff patrol. He participated in some of the patrol's most well-known operations, including the failed rescue of the kidnapped soldier Nachshon Waxman and the kidnapping of Mustafa Dirani, which was intended to help locate information about the captive navigator Ron Arad. At the beginning of the second intifada, the then Chief of Staff Shaul Mofaz appointed him commander of a General Staff patrol, promoted him to the rank of lieutenant colonel, and tasked him with complex operations in the heart of the Palestinian terror nests.

Later, Halevi received the rank of lieutenant colonel from the then Chief of Staff Moshe (Bogi) Ya'alon, and was sent to study in the United States. In 2005 he returned to combat and was appointed commander of the Menashe Brigade, which required regular activity against terrorist nests in the refugee camp in Jenin. So, in my room Rooms, opposed the deal to release the terrorists in exchange for the release of the kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit.

Opposed to the Shalit deal.

In 2007 he was appointed to the paratrooper brigade and a year later he led the Red Brigade in the "Cast Lead" operation in the Gaza Strip. In 2009 he was appointed head of the operation brigade, and as someone who knew the IDF patrol well and the mm formation, he had a significant contribution in synchronizing the units and the Joint Chiefs of Staff's effort in countering terrorism and at the beginning of the campaign between the wars, mainly against Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas in the Middle East.

In 2011, he was appointed commander of the Galilee formation, and three years later he was appointed commander of the FOM, despite the demands of then-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who asked to appoint him as his military secretary. In 2014, after Operation Protective Edge, he was appointed head of the intelligence division. In 2018, he was appointed commander of the Southern Command and before About a year ago he was appointed to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff.

General Halevi is not an extroverted figure in the General Staff.

He is considered to be a quiet person, but at the same time opinionated, and one who knows how to stand his ground.

His moves are sometimes seasoned with cynicism but also with wit.

In the army he is defined as systemic, one who has no enemies, but also does not belong to a certain "clique".

At the top of the IDF, they believe that Halevi is expected to continue in the line of his predecessor in the position of Aviv Kochavi, among other things in a way that prefers airstrikes to ground maneuvers.
