New trends in first names for children can be seen every year.
BW24 researched which birth names were the most popular in 2022 in the largest cities in Baden-Württemberg.
Stuttgart - There are really enough first names to choose from - in a wide variety of variants and depending on the region or country, some with their own subtleties.
However, trends in children's maiden names can be seen every year anew.
In 2021, for example, Mia and Noah were particularly popular in the southwest.
In the largest cities in Baden-Württemberg, there were other top names for first names.
BW24
asked the registry offices in Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Mannheim and Stuttgart and identified the most popular first names in 2022.
Baden-Württemberg: Clear trend in naming in the largest cities
Many parents think long and hard about what name to give their child.
With others, it is often immediately clear which one it should be.
In the state capital of Stuttgart, most couples chose the first names Mia (1st place), Emilia and Emma (2nd place) for girls.
For boys, it was Theo and Noah.
As in 2021, the latter seems to have been a popular choice in the other major cities of Mannheim, Heidelberg and Karlsruhe.
The table shows which first names were chosen there:
city | First name: girl | First name: boys |
Stuttgart | Mia, Emilia and Emma | Theo and Noah |
Manheim | Ella and Mila | Leon and Noah |
Heidelberg | Emilia, Emma and Mila | Paul and Noah |
Karlsruhe | Emma and Emilia | Noah and Leon |

"Short first names have been in vogue for a long time," said Kristin Loga from the Prof. Udolph Center for Name Research in Schwanewede (Lower Saxony) last year to
BW24.
This has also continued in 2022.
The girl's name "Mila" has slipped into the list of the most popular names.
"The nickname Mila is a short form of Ludmil(l)a or Emilie/Emilia," explains Kristin Loga.
The name comes from the Slavic and consists of two parts.
"Lud" therefore means "people" and Mila in Urslavic means "dear, dear, valuable", defines the name researcher.
Most popular first names in Baden-Württemberg: Popularity is probably based on melodic first names
Kristin Loga told our editorial team why exactly "Mila" was so popular last year.
On the one hand, it is possible that the preference for certain given names had an effect.
"It is also possible that the name was perceived by many people as melodic, positive, soft or something similar and therefore pleasant because of its sound," explained the name researcher.
The consonants "m" and "l" are pronounced quite softly.
The "i" as a front vowel is also rather soft and "a" is, according to Loga, a typical final sound for a female given name.

These aspects can also be found in the popular first names "Mia", "Emilia" and "Emma".
The boys' names reflect the trend towards names with a biblical or religious reference.
Loga explained that this would play a particularly important role in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, i.e. in southern Germany.
It remains to be seen whether a new trend in baby names will prevail in 2023 or whether the previous one will continue.
