A new book about the first two years of Joe Biden's term as president reveals how involved the administration was in trying to protect Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, against whom at least three assassination plots were hatched by the Russians.
According to the book, CIA chief Bill Burns secretly traveled to Kiev shortly before the Russian invasion in February 2022 and told him - to his complete astonishment - that the Russians were plotting to eliminate him.
The author Chris Vital writes in his book that in January Zelensky still held the opinion that the Russians would not invade his country without some kind of provocation from Ukraine, and even accused the Americans of sowing "panic".
"Burns came to bring Zelensky back to the ground of reality," the book says.
It is also said that Burns told him in a double-faced way that special forces on behalf of the Kremlin had already received instructions to come and eliminate him.
"Biden told Burns to tell him as many accurate details as possible about the Russian plots," it said.
This move by Biden "led to Zelensky to change gears and listen. He was amazed by the things and began to be more sober about the situation," Whipple wrote.
He added that "the intelligence [that the Americans provided] was so detailed that it allowed the security forces of Ukraine to thwart two assassination attempts against him."
