Russia expert Rüdiger von Frisch was a guest at the Freisinger Dom-Gymnasium.

He spoke to 200 students about Putin and the war against Ukraine - and answered many questions.

Freising

– The Freisinger Dom-Gymnasium offered its students an extraordinary event: none other than the former German ambassador in Moscow and author, Rüdiger von Fritsch, was invited to speak to the high school students about the war against Ukraine.

The most impressive were the questions from the students, which caused goosebumps at times.

According to the expert, war against Ukraine could end in different ways

Around 200 high school students were "smuggled through" the music room on Friday morning so that everyone could enjoy the lecture by the former ambassador.

Under the spotlight "Zeitenwende", which is also the title of his latest non-fiction book, von Fritsch introduced the situation for around 30 minutes - a situation that is quite complex, but which he had worked through in a school-appropriate and yet precise manner.

"Putin just still dreams of the old empire, with splendor and greatness," said von Fritsch.

"At the same time, he has failed to use the country's wealth to build an economy to support himself." What's more: Putin "is a KGB man and always thinks of conspiracies first.

And that's how he acts: with propaganda, repression and bribery," said the former ambassador.

Probably the biggest debacle: "The head of state is fighting for his own power at home in Ukraine with military means." According to the author, this could end in various ways: for example through a ceasefire including negotiations or changed power relations in Russia, for example through a military coup.

"Giving him what he wants to make him happy isn't going to work"

The first question was then also the one that was burning on the nails of most: Will there be a nuclear war?

Von Fritsch said: "Unfortunately, that cannot be completely ruled out.

But Putin hasn't gone completely insane, you can't believe that.

I myself don't think a nuclear strike is likely.” Also a student question: How likely is it that the Russian people will rise up and thus end the war?

"Whoever walks with his head bowed will not have his head cut off," von Fritsch quoted a Russian proverb.

However, Putin is now bringing fathers, brothers and sons into the war.

"That could change something."

Because von Fritsch had got to know the Russian President himself as ambassador, this question was of course inevitable: "What's he like, Putin?" there is a lot of anger under the surface.” That is precisely why one should not underestimate him and must know exactly what a victory for Russia would mean: namely “further experiments” by Putin in terms of country acquisitions.

"Giving him what he wants to make him happy isn't going to work.

That is a thought from 1938.” That is why the West must draw a clear line – also with arms deliveries.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

However, von Fritsch does not believe that Putin would be so daring as to extend his attacks beyond the EU borders.

The expert was able to answer one of the concluding questions with a resounding yes, namely “Did Putin underestimate the President of Ukraine?” Von Fritsch could still remember what Putin once said about Zelenskyj in his presence: “But I like that here can't even reproduce it, it was so derogatory."
