Against American protectionism, Brussels fights for its car manufacturers

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen denounced proposed US subsidies for electric cars in Davos.


On January 27, Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market, will travel to Washington.

He hopes, among other things, to convince the federal government to give European manufacturers access to the tax credit offered across the Atlantic to buyers of electrified vehicles "made in America", or more precisely in the United States, Canada and in Mexico.

A few days later, the French and German Ministers of the Economy will in turn plead in favor of European industry which could suffer from the draft created by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

This new American law, voted last summer, in fact subsidizes industries established in America whose activity will ultimately enable them to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

These include electrified vehicle factories and electric battery factories whose projects have actually multiplied since its establishment.
