A 14-year-old girl fatally shot an 11-year-old boy in the parking lot of a Dallas, Texas, apartment complex after retrieving a gun during an argument with another girl, police said.

Authorities said the 14-year-old girl fired in the direction of the girl she was fighting with, but the shot ended up hitting the 11-year-old boy Sunday afternoon.
“All involved are children and this is a horrific incident,” Police Sergeant Warren Mitchell said.
The 11-year-old boy was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police said the 14-year-old fled the scene of the shooting and was detained at a nearby apartment complex.
The minor is being held at a juvenile justice center and is expected to be charged with murder.

The gun was recovered, according to police, who are still investigating.
The death comes a week after a six-year-old boy from Newport News, Virginia, took a gun from home, brought it to school and shot his teacher.
The boy shot 25-year-old Abigail Zwerner in the chest, who was seriously wounded and remains stable.
