Culture Secretary Michelle Donnellan said the government would soon publish draft legislation that would include proposals to ban conversion therapy in England and Wales: "The law will protect everyone, including those who are targeted on the basis of their sexuality or transgender."

Britain is about to ban LGBT conversion treatments, which aim to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity.

Culture Minister Michelle Donnellan said today (Tuesday) that the government will soon publish draft legislation that will include proposals to ban conversion treatments in England and Wales. "The law will protect Everyone, including those who are targeted on the basis of their sexuality or are transgender," the minister said in a statement.

In 2017, a UK survey of LGBT people found that 5% of those surveyed had been offered conversion therapy and 2% had undergone such treatment.

More than half of the treatments were performed by religious groups, according to the survey.

The British government said in 2021 that it would enact a ban on such conversion treatments to prevent "abhorrent treatments that can cause mental and physical harm", but then decided that the ban would only apply to lesbians, gays and bisexuals, leaving transgender people out.

Donelan said today that the draft legislation would provide protection for all transgender people as well.

Yesterday, the British government decided to block a controversial Scottish law aimed at making it easier for people to prostitute their legal gender.

This was the first time that a Scottish law had been blocked because it might have an impact on wider British law.

Scotland's first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, called the measure a "frontal attack" on the Scottish Parliament and pledged to oppose it.

According to her, the Scottish ministers will "defend" the law.

The Scottish government is expected to appeal the decision.

Sturgeon's government believes that the current procedure is too difficult and invasive and causes distress among people who are already marginalized and constitute a minority group.
