Naturally, when talking about interior design, the first things that come to mind are the furniture, the walls, the flooring, the kitchen and even the accessories.

But when we enter the house we are impressed by the whole complex.

And, even though we seem to have forgotten the ceiling along the way - in recent years we can see an upward trend in the design reference to the sixth wall of the house.

But, if we go back a moment in history to the palaces and castles of luxury in Europe and even to the churches - we will find that actually, since time immemorial, the ceiling has been an important and inseparable part of the design vision with impressive wall paintings and magnificent cornices.

"With the modernization and cleanliness of the space from a design point of view, the ceiling decorations slowly disappeared from our lives," explains interior designer Shlomit Zaldman, "but in recent years there has been a renewed increase in treating the ceiling as part of the design aspect. This is something that as an interior designer I encounter more and more in recent years, and the design choices depend style and period".

From exposed concrete that gives an urban look, to wood paneling that gives the space a rustic look, to transparent glass ceilings or those that are decorated with artistic elements - today's ceilings are getting a renewed refinement.

"A space is not just a floor and walls, the ceiling is an integral part of the materiality and the happening" (Photo: Gilad Radet)

According to designer Ella Morgan, "Any ceiling can become an integral part of the design. It doesn't matter if you live in an apartment with a standard ceiling, a villa with high ceilings or an old house with a sloped tiled roof - you can turn any ceiling into a work of art according to the design style of the house."

Zaldman also agrees and in her opinion it is a design mistake not to treat the ceiling as part of the design: "A space is not just a floor and walls, the ceiling is an inseparable part of it, an inseparable part of the materiality, the experience, the happening. Even if there is a choice to leave it very clean, there are still ways to use in order to serve the project in a good and unique way. We must refer to the ceiling."

Do you like high and impressive ceilings?

Kobi Khalifa, the owner of the company Artpro, which specializes in Belgian windows, says that "the roof is the main thing of the house, since without a roof - there is no protection and no house."

In a private house of his design that was built right above a grove, a wonderful connection was made between a ceiling covered in wood in an ancient construction style without screws or nails and huge windows made of glass, so that it seems as if the roof of the house is standing in the air and a spectacular view is reflected around it.

Another example of its design is a dining room in a private house, designed like a sun room.

That is to say - all the walls and the ceiling are made of glass and iron, so that those sitting in the dining area can see the view and the sky from any direction they are in and feel connected to nature, when in fact they are inside the house.

The combination of the beams with a minimalist design causes the ceiling to become a significant and dominant part of the home's design (Photo: Shay Epstein)

In the family home of Yanon Ben David, who owns an office for architecture, planning and home design, in the Golan Heights, the ceiling was designed so that it would be part of the design and even complement it.

The entire ceiling is covered with large and impressive wooden beams in order to give the house the desired appearance of a 'small house on the prairie'.

The resulting appearance is very rustic, pleasant and inviting, and blends harmoniously with the minimalist design of the rest of the house, so that the ceiling really becomes a central and significant part of the design of the character of the space.

An out of the box solution.

In a two-story house designed by interior designer Ella Morgan - the ceiling became a real work of art, and all this thanks to the air conditioner's evaporator: "I wanted to find a creative, and outside the box, solution for the air conditioner's evaporator. I didn't want to make a plaster ceiling, I was looking for something special and unusual and the solution The evaporator was to be wrapped in an engraved wooden ceiling. We created a truly breathtaking work of art on the ceiling. On top of the wood paneling I assembled a lighting fixture, one that would blend into the design and only when turned on is it visible to the eye, as is the texture on the ceiling. The solution is a design solution that also serves a need. Hiding the evaporator, turned from a disadvantage to an advantage".

The smooth ceiling was dismantled and the sloping tile roof was exposed and decorated with whitewashed wooden beams.

The private home of interior designer Shlomit Zaldman combines a rustic ceiling with a modern home: "It is an old house that has undergone a massive renovation. It has a tiled roof and the ceiling is sloped in the living room and gallery area. I decided to enhance this feature in the character of the house, to dismantle the smooth ceiling and put beams there A tree that will emphasize the ceiling and its height and also give a material dimension to the space. The entire interior design of the house is modern, but the meeting with the rustic ceiling created a design interest in the space. The new language created is eclectic, and without it the space could transmit a feeling of coolness."

Not only at home.

The designer Marina Rechter-Robinstein also used the ceiling as part of the overall design in the planning of an office space.

The talented designer gave the space a young, modern and creative look by referring to the sixth wall as well.

Also, special emphasis was placed on the acoustics by acoustic tiles hanging from the ceiling - which makes the design not only beautiful and one that corresponds with the space perfectly, but also practical and useful - especially when it comes to common spaces in the office such as the cafeteria area and the meeting room area.
