According to state media, a German national has been arrested in Iran.

The person is said to have photographed in a "sensitive zone" in the south-west province of Khuzestan, the state-run newspaper Jam-e Jam reported.

There was no information on the identity or the time of the arrest.

There are repeated demonstrations in the province.

The Foreign Office said it had taken note of the reports in the Iranian media.

The German embassy is currently trying hard to clarify.

According to the judiciary, at least 40 foreign nationals were arrested during the recent wave of protests.

Iran indicted some on charges of espionage.

Critics accuse Iran of holding foreign nationals as political hostages.

Tehran denies these allegations and usually justifies the arrests with national security.

Baerbock wants to increase pressure on Iran

With the outbreak of protests in mid-September 2022, the Islamic Republic of Iran plunged into a serious political crisis.

The trigger was the death of Iranian Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini after she was taken into police custody.

She had been arrested by the so-called vice police for violating Islamic dress codes.

Since then there have been ongoing protests against the regime in Tehran.

Security forces are cracking down on the demonstrators, and several people have already been executed.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock had repeatedly condemned the executions as an inhumane act by the Iranian leadership.

Most recently, she summoned the Iranian ambassador to Germany on Monday to talk to him about the repression and killings.

In the EU, the Greens are promoting further increasing the pressure on the Iranian regime with sanctions.
