The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong interviewed more than 400 public housing residents on gerontech in December last year. Among them, 79% of the respondents said that they or the elderly in their families needed to use gerontech products, and 76% of the respondents thought the price was too expensive.

According to the survey, about 70% of the respondents said they had never heard of gerontech, and 95% of the respondents believed that the government did not do enough to promote gerontech.

In addition, more than 80% of the respondents are in favor of extending the healthcare voucher scheme to the purchase or rental of gerontech products.

Ngan Man-yu, member of the Legislative Council of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong, pointed out that the survey shows that the elderly have insufficient knowledge of gerontech. In order to promote the use of gerontech by public housing households, it is recommended that the government expand the scope of application of the current "Aging and Rehabilitation Innovation and Technology Application Fund" To individual applications, as well as children with special needs, rather than only allowing institutions to apply.

The party also suggested that the government allow citizens to buy or rent gerontech products with medical vouchers.

Lin Xinlian, vice-chairman of the Family Affairs Committee of the Democratic Alliance for Betterment of Hong Kong, suggested that the Housing Authority set up a special team to proactively contact residents in need of "gerontech", and the government directly subsidizes the installation and maintenance of gerontech for public housing residents.

He believes that the government should make good use of district health centers to hold exhibitions to promote gerontech, and help the elderly to rent products on the spot.
