A new mega deal in India flushes billions more into the coffers of the Mobility division.

Munich – It is the largest locomotive order in the company's history: Siemens wants to supply the Indian state railway company with 1,200 locomotives for freight transport.

The company announced this on Monday (January 16) in Munich.

According to the information, the order has a total value of around three billion euros.

According to Siemens, the contract includes the delivery of the locomotives over a period of eleven years and maintenance and repairs over a period of 35 years.

The assembly is to take place in the Indian state of Gujarat in an Indian Railways plant together with employees of the railway company.

Siemens Mobility wants to build the drives itself – also in a plant in India.

"The locomotives are a completely new development for the Indian market, based on existing technology," said a Siemens spokeswoman.

The first locomotive should be delivered in two years.

According to Michael Peter, head of Siemens Mobility, the 9,000 hp vehicles are the "most powerful electric locomotives on the market".

In freight transport, they could carry loads of up to 4,500 tons at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour.

In general, things are going brilliantly at Siemens - a few weeks ago, the Munich-based group announced record sales:

"I am very pleased about this major order, which will help to achieve the country's ambitious goals of building the world's largest electrified rail network," emphasized Siemens CEO Roland Busch.

According to the company, India has one of the largest rail networks on the planet, which is used by up to 24 million passengers and over 22,000 trains every day.

In 2022 it became known that Siemens was also doing big business in Egypt - the land of the pharaohs was being equipped with a high-speed rail network.
