Opinion The reform train will not stop: do you want to talk? Here are the conditions Israel today

2023-01-17T21:10:09.676Z

After the calls for a civil uprising, the opposition moved on to talk about reaching a "compromise" • The change in attitude illustrates the public and ideological momentum to implement Levin's reforms • The fact that there is opposition to the initiatives does not negate the legitimacy of the elected government to lead the move • This is what we learned both in Oslo and in disengagement

The Netanyahu government can already claim some sort of psychological achievement on the front of legal reforms: the drift is starting to move in the direction of "negotiation".

At the front of the protest, loud banter is still resounding about Meri Zechii calling for disobedience, but in the background there is already talk of "negotiations".

That is, there is something to talk about any corrections, but the process should be done in dialogue.

Strive for a "compromise".

This means that the recognition that the public and ideological impulse to implement Levin's reforms is comparable in strength to the weight of the opposition, and even stronger than it.

This is something that the government must internalize, and this should also be the message to the outside: there will be full tolerance for demonstrations and protests - but the reform train does not stop.

This achievement should first of all be credited to the Minister of Justice, Yariv Levin, who broke the behavioral taboo of castration: he dared to respond to the judicial system.

His immediate and resolute response speech to Supreme President Esther Hayut was a defining moment in the history of the relationship between the legal elite and the people's government.

The regime of humiliation, under the auspices of clichés such as "we have one court", has passed.

It is allowed, necessary, desirable, and even urgent - to argue with ethics, with the organizational structure, and with the social composition of the legal system.

This continued in the Constitutional Committee hearings yesterday.

The system couldn't believe that this was happening to them: elected officials at the level of Yariv Levin and MK Simcha Rothman are sitting - and they answer. And they reason. And they are eloquent. , on the top.

The representatives of the legal establishment are used to entering a discussion room with unthinkable nobility, wrapped in the marquise cloak that protects them from any criticism, and dictating their views knowing that no one has the essential authority to confront their "professional position".

Well, this time they sat in amazement in front of elected officials who are no less knowledgeable and intelligent than they are, who are not ready to be dismissed with disdain - and their constituents.

The coalition would do well not to rush to pick up the negotiating gloves, because according to the Israeli government's track record, negotiations almost always mean dragging on for months - if not years - of discussions, closed forums, comparative studies and "four-eyed conversations", the purpose of which is to communicate.

The government has a legal, public and conceptual mandate to lead the required reforms in the justice system.

The fact that there is opposition does not negate the legitimacy of the elected government to lead a move.

This is how we learned in Oslo, this was also the case with disengagement.

Those like the Israeli left - and even more so our legal system - know this.

Want to chat?

On three conditions: the willingness of the heads of the judicial system to open wide the windows of Versailles, to look out, to admit the need for corrections and to recognize the authority of the elected democratic government to lead them;

A time frame will be defined - there will be no smears, there will be no delays.

There is a deadline, then a vote by the people's elected representatives in the Knesset;

And most importantly: the process will be managed from beginning to end with complete transparency.

in a live broadcast.

The era of the curtain is over.

Under these conditions, and only under these conditions, there is scope for negotiations.

Otherwise - to continue, as they said in disengagement, with sensitivity but with determination.
